Been rackin' my brain since forever trying to figure out why so many of the tractor pictures posted here show the tractors with the darned rain caps flipped the wrong way.

Then it finally dawns on me. They must spend the biggest share of their time on a darned trailer. Duh! :>)

I like the coffee can approach,keeps ya on yer toes..when that ol two cylinder pops once and the can goes 30 feet in the air,ya gots to avoid gettin hit in the head by it and keep it from hitting yer fresh painted hood.. my idea of good quality fun..

Are you talking about the little flapper thing that goes on the end of the exhaust pipe ? Which way should it go ? Seems if the hinge was on the bottom it would be open all the time or until the tractor is backed up a few feet or if it bottoms out by running over a ditch or log. With the hinge on top it will keep the mice, voles and snakes from making a nest in the muffler, just hafta remember to crawl under and open it before the tractor is started. Got tired of crawling in the wet so I ran a long choke cable to mine now I can open and close it from the seat. Weeds and stuff catch on the cable sometimes and tends to smoke some, but that's okay it's another way to tell if the carb is set too lean. Not sure just how to fix it so it don't start smoking when trash or something gets hung up, any ideas?

I see tractors all the time with both the rain caps as well as your standard coffee can, soup can, or whatever. The one thing I've never seen is a true "rain trap" on a machine. They still list them in the CAT One Safe Source book, and I've seen them listed as options on some older equipment. All it is is a rounded shape deal that has a wide open top, and then inside it has a drip plate that actually covers the hole into the engine and funnels any water that hits it out through a drain hole. It looks like a pretty good setup, no moving parts to "clank and chatter" but how it works in practice is another matter. Any of you ever used one???

Wayne I have a D2 5U Cat that has a rain trap on both stacks, main, and pony. Still use that special can on both when parked at the shows,

After an all day reading of post after post after post... I know My childhood and farming experience is a life lost as I never had a flapper klinker. I'm spending the winter rebuilding the 300U as I'm sure the turbine is shot. The error of my ways revield... Thank you Allen, Thank You, I have called my therapist.

The reason there backwards is to keep tree limbs
from tearing your muffler off when they catch, backwards it just pushes it down.

Well you Auzzie thing you, and I have thought that one day wife and I would hop aboard your national airlines and take a looksee down under (Quantas?).

The one that is sideways, (back to the rain cap) not only has to be that way, but the rpm's have to be low so that when it hits the perlins, it will dip and not catch.

please enlighten me! which way is right and which way is wrong????? as of right now everything i have the cap flips back and pushes the smoke up and out of my face. i think it looks the best. a while back i was going through some pics from high school and all our tractors have them flipping up forewards. please help!!! i'm lost now.

Allan, mines on backards so most of the limbs will not tear it off.

This reminds me of one I haven't thought about in years. We had cotton packer mounted on a 4-post 4440 several years back. We removed the cap and wired a wad of screen out of a screen door over the stack, to retard any sparks. Every night, we'd throw a 5 gallon bucket over the screen to keep out any rain.

One morning several of us were standing around a pickup, eating a snack and carrying on about how goofy one of the guys was. He laughed right along with us and walked off to fire up the 4440.

We just happened to be looking his way as he checked all the fluids, and fired the tractor up. You know how them John Deeres rev up real high when you start 'em, well, he'd forgot to remove the bucket. Big 'ol pile of black smoke came boilin out from under that bucket and just seemed to hang under the canopy for a minute! Whole bunch of us just fell out laughing! I laughed 'til my sides hurt!

Never will forget that!

We used to have a Gallion road grader and used a coffee can to cover the exhaust at night. In the morning it was fun to see how high the can would fly when you fired it up. You'd be surprized how far it would go.

Allan, I have always run mine backward for three reasons.
1st... While I was still in the Panhandles, our tractor row faced north, We started reversing the rain caps so when the high north, northwest wind would not flip them open, and let in rain/snow and such. 2nd... Now that I am here in Cen-Texas we have trees, Now the reversed raincap helps to glide under lower limbs and such.
3rd... I Like the look of the reversed raincap. Had a custom hauler tell me to tape shut the exhaust on forward faceing raincaped TURBOed tractors.That is so the raincap didn't funnel air down the exhaust, through the turbo{thus spinning the non oiled unit} and out whatever intake that is open. Makes sence to me!

While it is be better that nothing gets into the turbine, I can not see a turbo turning very fast or very much if the engine has an air filter, as this will effectively prevent air flow through the engine. Turbo bearings are usually knackered by spinning at high speed (100,000rpm?) with no oil flow and being at high temperature (exhaust turbine at cherry red?) as well.

Yep He is right, I had a buddy of mine that was hauling his tractor to a pull one night I was going too he asked me why I put a rag in the pipe I told him So it won"t run the turbo backwards. Well He laughed at me. The pull was about three hrs away one way. We went to the pull and when we made it back home the turbo on his tractor wouldn"t turn one bit. I ended up ordering him a new one. Now he always keeps some scrap rags behind his truck seat. Well Thats My 2 cents worth. Have a good one JC

The turbine can and will spin when traveling. It is not air being forced down the pipe, it is the vacuum that is created by air flowing over the top of the pipe. This will suck air through the engine and turn the turbine. Not good when those bearings aren't getting any lubrication. Engine and tractor manufacturers always seal up both intake and exhaust. One is to keep debris out. Another is to keep the turbine from spinning.

Nate88, JC, You both have hit on why a turboed tractor should have the exhaust sealed up as best as possible.
The turbo will spin, unoiled! and probably get ruined. thus the tractor will be down probably at the most unopertuned time possible.
May not happen the first time, but the turbo spinning unoiled can not be good at all. But doing this will at some point come and bite you in the behind side. This info has been gleaned over the years, from a number of sources. Haul-drivers and Tractor mechanics.

I run them backwards so that when I get home and have a good strong fuel smell all over me I can get away with why I'm two hours late. Heck ,sometimes I just stand on one in the shop for a bit to gather the smell and disguise where I've really been like looking at some more iron . Plus, what's better than looking thru the smoke of an 806 puffing hard pulling 5 bottoms in heavy soil. Now we're really farming! MIgraine

Flipped the wrong way!! Lets see..... Climb on the tractor, realize the Lucks bean can (extra spicy) is still there on the exhaust pipe. Reach up front with the mud stick and flip 'er off. Am I wrong here?? :)

Allan,

What's the right way?

I have one sideways as it just fits under the shed and I go and come from the shed.

Have one on a short stack and I put it on the back side to help get the smoke into the air and outta my face.

Have one on a mower and put it on the front side soas to not hang up on trees.

Have one mounted on the back as that is the way it was when I bought the tractor.

Have one without with an angled exhaust.

Have 2 without. Exhaust is under the running board and out the back.

So what is the correct way?

Well, I don't know if it is "correct" or not, but the ones that live in the field open from the front to direct the exhaust away from the operator while operating at lower engine speeds, just as you say.

A feller hauling his tractor to a parade or cross-country would want it reversed in case he gets caught in a rain, I would imagine, because the road-wind would hold the goofy thing open all the time.

Well let's hope that fellow hauling the tractor doesn't have a turbo on it. The exhaust should be taped shut so that the turbo doesn't spin unoiled.

I slip a one liter plastic pop bottle with the top cut off over the exhaust of my John Deere D. It just fits and the first pop sends it into the rafters.

I used a can on my exhaust for awhile, but I saw something that looked neater. Someone had cut the insides out of a spin-on oil filter, and slipped that on his exhaust. I carried that a little farther. I painted the filter housing I use. Someday I might get a John Deere decal to put on it.
