Morning fellows, need some help. I have a '91 Ford 3/4 ton 4x4 diesel. It stopped charging the batteries last week. Checked the alternator and found it was bad, replaced and still not charging. Checked voltage regulator on passenger inner fender well and replaced. Still not charging? Dumb question is there a 'master fuse' some where in the circut or some other little thing I'm missing? I can charge up the batteries and it will run a couple days on the two 1200 amp batteries but would like to get it to work right. Thanks for taking time to help me out.

David.

Can't help on the no-charge, but when I replaced the alt. on my 88 F150 I had to replace the harness that plugged into the alternator, came with the alt. at no charge- parts guy said it was because of as fire hazard with the old harnesses. Did you have to replace it or here anything about it?

Check the fusible links coming from the battery cable side of the starter solenoid on the inside of the RH fender. One of those will be for the alternator.

Link

Looks to me like there is a condensor on the yellow/ white wire from the voltage regulator.
I would find this and remove it for testing purposes and see if it charges

I take it that the alt light is on.

Yep and amp gauge stays around 11-12ish and drops as batterys get weaker.

I'd wager to be that's a voltmeter.. not an ammeter...

I had one of those donkers one time that just about drove me crazy, as I could throw parts at it all day long and it wouldn't help. :>)

Seems to me that there are two field wires at the alternator and that they can't be reversed?

Maybe somebody who works on 'em every day will jump in here.

I would get out the handy dandy VOM and check the output from the alternator. My suspicion would be that the replacement alternator isn't any better than the first. If the alternator checks OK the next thing I would look for is a bad ground from the engine to the chassis.
