I found out that my new rebuilt generator has drained the current from a new six volt battery. I put the battery on 2 amp charge for twenty four hours. When I disconnected the charger cables I found that I had put the positive cable on the neg battery post and the neg cable one the pos. post. Have I completely ruined the battery? Now it seems the battery does not want to take a charge! Other than tell me how stupid I am what have I done! Appreciate you advice.

Charles,
Concentrate on the reason why your generator drained the battery. Fix that and do as the others say - discharge the battery completely, on a small load, and try charging again the right polarity. If it is dead, there will be nothing to do but put it down to experience and go get another. Most battery chargers have a fuse which will blow immediately a battery is reverse connected. If it hasn"t blown the fuse it was because of the extraordinary level of exhaustion of your battery, but worth checking out - perhaps the battery is still OK?. I have never reverse charged a battery myself ..... ecxcept when those little PP3 nickel cadmiums were a tad expensive - it was very unforgiving! I always claim "I"m always right and it"s the other nine billion who are wrong", but I know that if I had never made any mistakes I would not have learned anything. You will not make that mistake again, like there are quite a few things I remember from experience...thats life!

Even if his charger had a fuse, it would not blow when he tried to charge a COMPLETELY DEAD battery backwards.

It would only blow if he had tried to connect the charger backwards to a battery that WASN'T COMPLETELY DEAD.

After he completely discharges the battery and recharges it correctly, it will likely be just fine.

BOB,
Read my post CAREFULLY.
Also you may be aware that a lead acid cell is regarded as exhausted, long before the voltage approaches zero. Have a nice Christmas.

Heck we ran the battery hooked up backwards in my Super M for YEARS...
Ruined the battery and the regulator on the tractor...
Put it on the right way and leave it there, it might take charge. Been there, done that.

One time I even tried to jumpstart the tractor backwards off the truck.... The jumper cables, if they're good ones, will try to weld away the battery cables. You'll melt big divots into them..... ..

Then you'll replace the cables and the battery to keep everybody else from knowing what you did!

Charles, If it was a new battery, then it likely had some charge already, you might need to check out your charger. some of the Harbor Freight type chargers wont hold up 5 minutes like that. Don't ask how I know cause I ain't telling.

Hey Charles,

Quit beating yourself up. Happens to all of us.

You've just charged the battery backwards is all. Completely discharge it and then recharge using the corrrect polarity.

All you've lost is a little time.

Allan

the old saying s--- happens all you have to do is hook it up to a radio or something make sure you use the poles backwards- since you reversed the charge= when it is completely dead, rehook the charger the right way and recharge it should be alright- watch you don"t blow it up with gas fumes and wrong connections wear glasses etc.
