OK I know the fluids cold but is there anything during the winter to do to the Massey 135 Power Steering to make it work easier during the winter? Once it has warmed up it is fine but was wondering if there is a lighter fluid for the winter. Manual said to use the same fluid as the transmission. Makes my pump squeel and harder to turn the wheel! Mark H.

This is one of the biggest problems with plugging in diesels to start them. Water is wam enough for the engine to start but none of the other fluids are. Seen a LOT of bad hydraulic and transmission problems where people didnt follow the mfg instructions on warm up times. Most of the tractors I have worked with call for at least 15 minutes of warm up time at 50% throttle before use in bitter cold even if plugged in to ensure adequate lubrication. Proper p.s. function would be a side benefit of a longer warm up. Pump rebuilds arent too bad, run about $100 if the body isnt scored. If it is the $350 or so runs about right for a new after market pump.

Problem with the Massey Power Steering pump it is part of the block and not belt driven. I read they also don't have NOS ones left on the shelfs. Mark H.

My Allis gets its power steering from tractor hydraulics which is same as transmission but different resoviors. Afte I let the tractor run three or four minutes I raise and lower both three point and loader a couple of times before moving tractor. This seems to help warming the oil a little bit and seems to steer a little easier than if I just start and go.

Use synthetic fluid either by Redline, Amsoil, or Valvoline. This will provide the low temp. performance you are looking for while still maintianing the high temp. lubrication you need for hot weather.

What about taking a hair dryer to it when you start out I think my Dad used to do it yrs ago .But then we used side curtains along the hood motor area to get engine heat back to us inside the cab. Hi Mark . Ken C

I have the same problem on my ford 801, had it since I got it. I just start it up and let it run for about 10-15 minutes before I use it.

Probley would not hurt it to do it that way myself. If I plug it in for 15-30 mins it runs great but it does not warm up the power steering fluid. From what I have read the power steering pump is very expencive like $500.00+ to rebuild it so it might be a good idea anyway! Mark H.

After about 15 minutes the power steering fluid should have warmed up. But of course my ford uses tranny fluid in the power steering.

That's the nice thing about the newer JD's, you can have a heater on the tranny as well as on the block. Oil's nice and warm when you start it up. I'm not sure if you can add an aftermarket heater on the Massey or not.
