Alternator question

How can I tell if the alternator I have has a built in regulator. I know most of them do. I have an alternator I'm think of using to do a conversion to 12 volts from 6. If it doesn't have the internal regulator will the one from the six volt system work (I'm guessing not)?

Often one doesn't have to face a tangle of mysterious wires and mounting problems to convert from a 6V generator to a 12V alternator. If the proper 00 cables with swagged on or soldered connectors, clean connections, the biggest CCA battery installed that will fit. The regulator set for 7.2V measured at the battery. And the origional worn pulley on the generator replaced with a new ne that doesn't slip the belt. 99% of applications will start and run fine in the dead of winter.

Got a picture of the alternator, or a model number for us to consider? Or maybe even what it came out of...

I don't have a picture of it. It is a Delco Remy with two wire connection and a place for about an inch wide plug in. It has been in my shed for a while and is either new or rebuilt. I can't remember where it came from.

If the plug-in protrudes from the back of the Delco alternator, it requires an external regulator. If the plug-in protrudes from the side near the back edge, it has the internal regulator.

I think it is on the back but I'll have to check. If it is on the back will the exixsting regulator work?

If an alternator requires an external regulator, the regulator must be one suitable for that alternator. Regulators for generators will not work with alternators. Are you sure you wish to undertake a conversion?

I've done it before but the alternator had an internal regulator. I didn't think the regulator for the six volt would work but wanted to be sure. I'd just as soon leave the six volt system but the battey is pretty new, the cables are clean and good but I'm just not getting enought power to turn the engine fast enough. The tractor runs good and cranks easy with a jump start.

What is the voltage across the coil when cranking. And what is the voltage between the starters main input stud on it's body and it's cast iron body. Also the voltage between the solenoid input and the starters cast body. Also measure from post to post, not clamp to clamp on the battery while cranking. It sounds like there is an otherwise sound electrical system with a component that looks good but is dropping voltage. Using 12V may treat the symptom for now but not solve the cause.

Jerry,

That one is internal.

thanks Allen. Maybe next week I can get it changed over during my days off if the weather isn't too cold.

Here's a hot-rod related site that has good information for tractor conversions, too.

The first link is the ID page, the other link is the main page of their tech section.
