I have a friend who owns a salvage yard and he usually gives them and coils as i need them. I usually give him some extra parts i have laying around. I think he sells them to others for about $15. My rebuilder buys cores (bad) for $3

First off I do not know how much room you will have on a farmall because I do not know them off hand but lets go over some general info.

Most use a Delco 10SI alternator for 12V conversions. It is easy to find because they made millions of them and easy to wire the set up.
Are you sure you want to do this in a one wire set up. You may want to read This first.
A true one wire alternator cost about 3X the price of a regular alternator.
Now you need to decide which alternator you will want for this tractor. Imagine it mounted on the tractor and where you would want the wires to mount to it in relation to the adjusting screw hole. With the wires just under the adjusting screw this would be a 12 o-clock position. To the left is a 9 o-clock and to the right is a 3 o-clock. Now with this info go Here and scroll down to the APPLICATION DATA section and pick out which one you need.

John

I didn't go all the way through the article to see if they ever mentioned it, but the primary reason not to use a one-wire alternator in a tractor application is that it requires the engine to be revved to over 2000 RPM to excite the alternator and begin power production. This is no big deal with an automobile, and is usually nothing more than the first stab of the accelerator after start-up, or the first shift of the transmission. With us old tractor guys (who are trying to treat our old tractors as gently as possible), 2,000 RPM may not occur naturally until (best case) next summer when we put the bush hog on, or (worst case, with long stroke/ slow revving Molines) never. The 3 wire is easy to hook up, and only requires the addition of an "idiot lite", which can be one of those red or blue jeweled numbers which, while not stock, still look bitchin' on your dashboard.

The one wire alternators also have a trickle draw that will flatten the battery if left for several months. These cheap & easy swaps to a 12V alternator system sometime are not so cheap and easy.

I bought a Delco 10SI with a lifetime guarantee for a 1979 Camaro from my local Advance Auto Parts, it had exactly what I wanted for my 4010 gas and was only $35. The brackets were not that hard to adapt, the wiring at first had me baffled and then everything fell into place and I love it compared to the generator. Make sure your "idiot" light works or it won't charge. Mine will start charging at about a bump up from idle. In my opinion this 3 wire is as easy and just as good if not better than a 1 wire. I kept my generator in case I ever need to "go back." Good luck...Later, Mike
