Seems like most of the JD enthusiasts I know get the "big bug" when they get a big diesel- they love 'em, and pretty much lose interest in the smaller ones, at least beyond those they already have. I would think I would be rare to find anyone wanting to trade down.

Hi Living--

I understand what you want and why you want it. I have a 48 A (not restored cosmetically but a great runner) that I paid $1300.00 for about two years ago. If I were to "pretty it up" in a first class way, I still couldn't expect to get more than $2000.00 tops. You can still buy a sound ands seviceable A around here in the $1500-$1750 price range.

I know where there is a good running R. Nice condition, good sheet metal, not painted, good pony motor, tires starting to "go south", etc. A nice old R that anyone would be proud to have. It will take $6500.00 FIRM to get it. So I think to be realistic, you are going to have to pony up a little more cabbage than you originally planned to.
Those diesel standards are great old tractors, as are A's and B's. But the A's and B's are much more common, so scarcity and market dictate the price.

Here's a brief JD R story: every year our tractor club has an antique tractor display in conjunction with the Farm Bureau at the local shopping mall. It's absolutley priceless to see the reaction of the yuppies the first time they see a JD R "booming" down through the mall, some smoke pouring out. Most of them have no idea that such a thing even exists.

Good look on your deal.

I would not give 3000 for an A. Most I see are around 1500 to 2000

Nice ambition, but seriously, all of those tractors you mentioned are on average, FIVE TIMES as expensive as your A! You are going to need some additional cash to say the least!

I know that they are more expensive and I am will to give some boot. But I think you exagerated a little My tractor is worth about 3,000 a good R is 5,000 or 6,000 but I see them all the time not restored but running great for 2,000 to 3,500. and yes the 820 and 830 are more expensive but not 5 time that would be 15,000. And that would be crazy. so maybe double but not 5 times I and I did see a restored R on this website for 3,200

We're all proud of what we own and I don't know where you are but here in this area a parade condition A brings 18-2200....That's about it.

Just sell yours for 3 thousand; take that and a little more and buy whatever you want; you'll have many more options since most sellers will take cash and not many may be interested in trading..... ...for your tractor.

I don't doubt that you see them bring $3000 or even $3500 I have ,but when YOU are trying to sell you will be lucky to get around $2000
