Tractor collecting.......Just a fad?

Is antique tractor collecting just a passing fad? This bothers me. So us older gents, our fathers probibly bought the family's first tractor when we were about 7-8 years old. Some of you younger gents may now own a tractor from the 50's, 60's or 70's, because you grew up with them. But now with fewer people living on farms, and the younger genaration seems to be losing interest, will tractor colecting still servive? It seems pretty bleak for the next genaration, (born from 2005-2020). What are your thoughts on this?

I go to a lot of tractor shows and antique tractor auctions and I dont see any dropoff in interest epecially in the shows. Anybody that has one is showing them off to others particularly the grandkids so I think for the forseeable future this hobby will continue to thrive.

Its certainly a cheaper hobby than antique cars and therin lies the reason that more young people will get into tractors.

How much can you lose on a 2500.00 John Deere B compared to boats, 4 wheelers or snowmobiles

I didn't buy my tractors because someone else had one nor was it for an investment.I just love tractors

I know that from my point of view tractor collecting will be viable for a long time to ome. I am 29 and while I don't actually have a tractor yet I am in discussions to buy a Cockshutt 30 and I don't intend to stop there. The the thing that worries me is the long term availability of collectable tractors, I personally have no interest in newer tractors and I know that the price of older tractors is getting prohibitive,

One thing to be thankful of- that the government didn't own the old tractors. If it did they'd probably all be scrapped like almost all the WWII planes which are nearly extinct. How collectable is a P 51 Mustang- why were so many destroyed?

One thing likely to keep it going is that we are not talking about only one brand, or just a few years production, but rather all brands which have been manufactured, and so far it covers what has been produced for probably at least 75 years.

The demand for "average" old tractors has already hit its peak. I'm talking about IH M,s H's, 8N, 9N 2N Fords, JD B's, ect....The "common as dirt" kind of tractors. They might go up a buck or two, but they've hit their practical limit.

On the other hand, a Deere 630 LP High-Crop, or a Sheppard SD-4, or any truely RARE tractor will always be in demand by the "true collectors" out there. We're talkin' "museum quality and RARE" stuff.

In the last 10 years, the market has been flooded with a dozen different brands of compact tractors. As these get a few years on them, and they get a little more common and lower priced, on the used market, they will take the place of the 8N as the "estate tractor". (From my point of view, you can't consider the 8N as an example of a "collector driven price". I'd bet 90% of them are nothing more than over-sized lawnmowers nowdays)

I don't think the value of a well restored antique tractor will drop in the coming years, but I do believe they have about seen their limit. A great deal of "collectable" tractors are now in the hands of peole who are getting up in the years. They will be turned back on to the market in coming years. That might even cause a slight drop in price. John

Around here it is almost impossible to buy a 'decent' farm. All the big spreads are being broken up into 5-20 acre baby farms (3 sales last week). Each one will get a big house and have to have an 8N with a finish mower. Demand seems higher than ever for older tractors. An immaculate IH 986 sold for $5900 with cab heat and air at one of the sales; an 8N with a bad engine brought $3000 and a rough JD 70 brought $5500. I think old iron is safe. Of course, as I say that I got a pile of old Farmall and Ford stuff that I reckon I'm either going to have to sell, melt, or pay for a divorce lawyer.

Who knows,I will enjoy mine until I'm in a much better place then I don't think it will be all that important to me. I can see where the profit "ha ha" might go out of it some day but that does not mean we will get rid off our beloved machines. My wife cost me a bundle, and I'm sure I couldn't sell her but by golly I'm going to keep her and I don't care what others do with theirs. It does seem to be the older guys that have them. I'm 42 on last Friday. But when I'm at shows it's the little kids that go nuts over them. I love to see there faces when they see the old tractors.I guess what I'm trying to say it may turn out to be a fad. but as for me and my house we will keep them and enjoy them for what they are.Great old antique machines.

Although i do collect tractors and dont want the day to ever come of when our tractors are in scrap yards, but isn't it the feeling behind running or seeing a tractor that is the basis of this hobby? Like I forget who said it, but how they discribed the feeling on his John Deere?

I took a look at this, about 5 o'clock, and I wasn't quite sure what to say. So I figured why not see what my answer is! So I took out my John Deere, and went down the gravelle path that outlines my farm. Although it was misty out, I was still able to enjoy myself. I hopped on, and I thought, whats so speacial here. The feeling of power, I felt like I was with an old friend, no I WAS with an old friend.I headed down the path, at a nice speed, and I was able to enjoy the senary, I saw what this tractor and I helped build. The feeling of old ways, take me back to a simpler time. The sound of the engine, popping along. I was in my own world. So there is my reason that I think tractor collecting will survive. All you have to do, is share this experience with someone.

Bob

It wont survive. Tractor collecting is having its time in the sun NOW, but in 10 years, it will be as high as a lead balloon. P.S. Ain't it kind of weird that alot of people who has answerd this question (i guess you'd call it) is either Canadian, or named Dave?? LOL.

It's funny how the American collectors looking for rare tractors with steel wheels which often come with the highly collectable rice option. They never think to look in the frozen North where there is only 6 weeks of 24/7 Artic Summer summer. The steel wheels are either for the muskeg bogs or traction on the ice & snow.

I live about an hour and a half from Toronto, and here, the summer is 3 months of days above 25'c (80'f). then there are 2 months on either side of the summer that are jacket weather, then settle in for the winter! All 5 months of 20 below (10'f, i think). I dont think that the snow even melts in the Yukon's summer.

Any way, I think only the favourite and rare tractors will live on. I'm not going to list what I think are the favourites so I dont get into a political battle!

Cheers, Hank :-)

If you are thinking of buying a Canadian tractor above the Arctic circle, you have some pros and cons:

Pros:
-exchange rate. If you were to change $1,000 in U.S. funds, I think you'd get $1,200 Canadian.
-Yes there are alot of steel wheel tractors up here.
-If you live in the noth west of the U.S., then depending where you cross the boarder, there might not be customs.

Cons:
-The trip. Have a fun time getting up here, where I live, the winter is 8 months, and the other 4, there is still snow, and rarley there is a high of 5c. (about 40F). -No bearing guns unless your a cop. If you're around north Manitoba, or Nunavut, you'll have a polar bear problem. Really, bears wont come near if you make alot of noise. They dont have good seeing either.

So sorry to get off topic eh.

I think it will someday go away. As the small farmers sell out and there kids grow up and move to town they will have no place to keep or work on one. People who have salvage yards may not have anyone who wants to keep some old parts moving that they don't know what they fit or how they work. This may hurt a lot. There will always be some collectors but looks to me like they will drop in numbers some each year. Like others have said, the tractors we like won't be the ones younger folks grew up on so they won't be popular.

I hope it doesn't die out like a fad. I hope I can have another tractor someday after college or sooner.

It's going to fade just like Model T collection and restoration. Auto collectors are into late 60, 70's and 80's vehicles now. The 1st generation of collectors are either dead from old age or elderly. These are the fellows who purchased the two cylinder Deere's and the like. The 2nd and smaller generation of collectors are those with off farm income, in our prime earning years. Collecting the tractor that we drove as kids or what Grandpa had. The 3rd generation with be a few farm kids but corporate farms are taking over. A few heirs of estates who wound up with Grandpa's old tractor. Something that is artificially keeping "antique collecting" going but isn't antique collecting. Is those commuting rural dwellers with urban incomes. Who just want a cheap old tractor to shove snow out of the drive way. or to mount a mower/bush hog onto. I'm purchasing land, not old tractors to pay for my retirement.

I think the tractor hobby has really grown in the past few years. While the tractors from the teens, 20s and 30s have largely been relagated to the hobby scene, alot of us are still using tractors from the 40's, 50's and 60's. I think these tractors will keep the next couple generations interested for quite a few more years.

My tractor will never be sold but passed down till these grandchildren show it. 4 of the 5 have their own tractors and this younger one will have his ... it is here to stay...I am 63 years old and having my first show this year in my old home town.... No tractor collecting is here to stay!

Hello,
I'm 19, so I must fall in the young category. being a collector of tractors older than 1960, I have a fair collection for my age. I have a '45 McCormick W-9, '48 JD D, '56 MH 555, and a '59 Deutz F4L514, all Running or Restored. I enjoy this hobby which was passed down from my father, who has a collection of 41 Two-Cylinder Deeres.
I am almost finished my Apprenticeship as a John Deere Service Tech. Plan on doing this for about 5 to 10 Years and then go farming. I know of a few my age planning on doing the same.

Have a good one, Russ

I have also thought about this. I know that the big prarie tractors are bringing some big bucks right now, but will it continue? (I own a 30-60 Aultman Taylor). I see the 1970,s tractors getting alot more popular than what they are already. I can alos see some of the later tractors having collector interest like the International aint eaters. My Dad started collecting in 1968 and at the age of 2 I quickly caught on, and started helping with the research and the hunt of old iron. Heres hoping they continue collecting.

The cost of tractors will always stay high priced, because they are slowly becomming rarer to find, not just because of some rusting away, but the mass collectors! Like I know this guy with 12 Allis-Chalmers "G"!

I don't know where I fit; I'm 61 so I guess I'm "older gent." My tractors go from a 46 Ford 2N to a 54 JD 70. One of my sons and one gradson are really into the old tractors. (Too early to tell about the other grandson; he's only 8 months old, but I'll do my darndest to lead him in the right way!) But-that's three generations into old tractors and implements so I well satisfied with my contribution.
My gut feeling is that the interest isn't going to die. However, I think there will be an influx of more non-farm/non-agricultural folks getting involved. Notice the interest in the old-time farm days. And have you ever seen someone light up who drives a tractor for the first time? Those people are getting into the game too. So I think the hobby is safe.

My $.02

I think so. Even though tractors from the 20th century are all pretty good. (atleast a tractor that would be passed down through the genarations). At some point it might be sold because cash flow is tight, then it might be sold to a scrap yard, and you get the picture.

I don"t think so. I"ve been actively involved for "bout 20 years and the hobby has continued to grow. Don"t see any sign of it slowing down BUT, it is up to you and me and all of us to teach the next generation. Let your passion show! Reach out to the next generation and let them see what you do. I started out on my father"s lap "steering" the Farmall A. I have done the same with my children and now we are showing my grandsons the thrill of tractors and engines. Oh, by the way, just look at some of the more "established" shows. 30 to 50 years for quite a few, doesn"t sound like a fad to me.

Just like you said Dave, its our job to teach the next genaration. If we dont teach them, then how can we hope that tractor collecting will keep going? If we dont teach them well enough, they might not pass down the hobby to their kids. In a nut-shell, we control tractor collecting future for the next 60-70 yrs.

I dont think so Rumley Man. Good quality tractors will always be passed down through the families. By any chance did your folks by a Rumley?

Yes. it was a 1917 OilPull 30-60. I'm now the proud owner of it and of 2 OilPulls 15-30, a 1931 Rumely 6A. I have some pictures (and one of me trying to start the 30-60, picture dated 1922), but I don't own a scanner.

NO WAY! I was raised in farming but Dad had to quit because of health reasons before I could take over...but tractors are in my blood. I relax by wrenching or riding or washing or talking about tractors... witness this board. My 3 year old son is right there helping. Hopefully he will keep it going even though he might just show or "plow snow" like me. Later, MIke

The only way I can unwind is buy working on my tractor too eh! I think that if tractor collecting comes to an end, that genaration without a tractor enriched life is going to have alot of people going to 'quacks'.

I do see where you are coming from, but that generation wouldn't know the pleasure of working on tractors. I like your term "Tractor enriched life" !!

When I first went to the old car meet at Carlisle,Pa. it was a couple football fields in size[1984]. Now it is 88 miles of walkway in the fairgrounds of parts and related tools etc.The same thing will happen with the tractor hobby. The fact that there is no planned obselecance[bad spell]makes this more likely.Tractors are made tough to last and people who are not farmers will come to appreciate this more and will want one for whatever reason. Then the investors will come out bid everyone else and cause prices to skyrocket.Ithappens to antique bikes and cars whenever the stock market is down. Then the market remains high old stuff.People love old stuff and since it will never be made again will pay good money for it.Especially since we are in a new century.
