I"ve spent too many hours trying to fix my H. I"m looking for a mechanic in the Sacramento area. I"ve gone through the carburator, new plugs, new spark plug wires, distributor etc. Still sounds like an old Deere. Let me know if you know of somebody in my area. Thanks.

If you have spark to all cyl, I think the carb has a port plugged yet. Does it smoke black when running? Possible plugged air cleaner.

cbox,

An old-fashioned mechanics test is to take a screwdriwer (hopefully, with a WELL INSULATED handle), and short out the spark to ground at each spark plug, one at a time. When you short out the spark to the cylinder(s) that is missing, there will be NO change in engine RPM's or exhaust sound.

Once you locate the cylinder(s) giving the problem, you can check for problems.

DISCLAIMER: Do this at your own risk of shock, and all consequences thereof! Be carefull. If you get "zapped", a hand or elbow may jerk and make contact with HOT or moving parts!

Take a look at your intake manifold for holes. My H sounded like a JD once and it was because my manifold was loose.

cbox,
It sounds to me like you have a dead miss. Have you checked the compression on all four cylinders? It may be something as simple as a piece of carbon holding a valve open, or it could be a blown head gasket or burned valve. You should also remove the valve cover and check for broken valve springs or stuck valves. Just remember, all four cylinders need good fire, fuel, and compression to run smoothly. Good Luck and God Bless, Tommy

Completed the compression test today. All cylinders registering between 85 and 90. Replaced the plugs and started it up. Started hard, coughed a lot of black smoke then shot a bit of flame up through the pipe. It kept running but very rough and no power to speak of. Any more ideas?

I haven't done a compression test. Thanks for the advice. That sounds like the right next step.

Gradual degradation sounds like fuel problem of either not enough, to much, or contaminated. How did the plugs look? Were they black and sooty, to much fuel, or gray white, running lean?

I drained the fuel, cleaned the fuel filter, sediment bowl and put fresh gas in. The filters were relatively dirty. The plugs were/are black and sooty though - still.

You don"t say you fitted a new dist cap. You may have a crack in the cap allowing spark to track to wrong plug.

I didn't replace the distributor cap but looked at it carefully. Will do so again. Thanks for the suggestion.

do you have the plug wires in the right firing order? or is your distributor off any?

Before Christmas I had a wagon with a load of people caroling. The tractor had been purring as usual then started running rough. By the time I got home it was coughing, spitting and at one point was shooting flame out of the stack. The distributor is lined up just like it was when I bought it years ago. I thought maybe a plug had gone bad. Replaced them all. The sp wires are all correct. The timing still seems right. I"ve tried adjusting the distributor but it runs best (albeit badly) right where it is.

How did you determine that was the problem? Is there something specific I should be looking for?
