You know it's slick when you slide in gravel in four wheel drive on a flat straight road, not going fast. Woke up to rain, and has been raining all day, and worst yet, freezing. The ice was about 3/8" thick on my truck at 1pm.
Looks like no school tomorrow!!

David B, Put 500 to 800 lbs of wt in your pickup. that will help keep you on the road. (5 to 8, 100lb suitcase wts). We use this many times in the high Tex/Okla panhandle. Also try being lighterfooted as other have said.
Later,
John A.

I already have 200# of weight in the back. Suitcase weights- I would, but if there were a wreck, it could be ugly.
My foot is light. I already get bad gas milelage, I need all the help I can get.

David, Here's a second alternative. Go get some plactic garbage sacks. Fill them with H20, Tie each sack off, so they don't leak. Making water bladders! do this on 5 to 10 sacks, or so till you get 50 gal or so. H20 is ave 8 lbs/gal.
The water will feeze in the bladders(sacks) and stay put in the bed of your truck.
When the weather warms....simply slice the sack with your pocketknife, or untie and let Mother Nature take its course when temps rise above 32 dergees. At that time pitch the sacks in the trash if you sliced them or resuse the ones you untied.
Definately safer then the suitcase wts, and them sliding around in a wreck situation. Good luck. later,
John A

Be safe and good luck with it. We had about an inch of ice the week before Xmas. Lights were out for over 24 hrs. Got them back on Xmas Eve.

Well, my experience, - 4wd doesn't help MUCH on icy conditions, except that in braking, the wheels tend not to lock up quite as soon when you brake. Get a little agressive on the throttle, and everything comes unglued! Wrecker operators long ago recognized that when they came out to a 4wd stuck, it required a longer cable!

Maybe your foot is too heavy? Just kidding. I took a trip today of about 60 miles round trip, didn't have any problem with the roads, did have trouble keeping the ice off the windshield. Have you made any progress on the 345 into the M?

The highways were fine, but these few traveled gravel roads were covered with ice.
I put the question on the pulling board, and I got a phone number of a guy that put a 345 in a M.
Dad said maybe he'd just find a cheap Ford engine, local junk man gets 550 for a 345, when he has them. Good reason to, sense they haven't been made in years.
What makes you thinks teenage boys have heavy feet? :) (I really wasn't going fast, 25-30 mph)

Hey, I was a heavyfooted teenager myself once. I know what you mean about the gravel roads, I have only 3/4 mile of gravel. Did you know that a 4 wheel drive trailblazer can be made to spin? What was that about a heavy foot?

It's not that we have heavy feet, it's the lack of resistence by the gas pedal.
