diesel engine knocking

I have a two cyl diesel that knocks. The engine has been fully rebuilt after I found the cylinders and pistons were very badly worn at the top end of the cylinders.(possibly from knocking before I purchased it)
The pump timing is set by the specs at 27 deg btdc.It starts well, runs well at revs (2000max) but knocks.I can adjust the timing by placing shims under the pump (bosch) or I can alter the pump timing on the end of the camshaft by repositioning the pump cam by 3 deg incriments.

Should I advance or retard the timing?
What would happen if I mixed a little diesel oil with the diesel fuel to tone the diesel down a little?

If the engine is too far retarded what will the symptons be? and if it is too far advanced?

The motor has had new pistons, bearings, injectors ,headr repaired etc.
It knocked as bad before the rebuild.
thanks
Paul

Paul,

Do you know if the injector pop pressures were checked? If the injector pop pressure is too low, fuel will enter the combustion chamber a little "before its time" and this will have the same effect as pump timing being advanced a little. Engine will run fine but fuel delivery is slightly early, therefore causing a slight knock over and above the normal diesel knock.

The injector tips were replaced with new ones and the pressures adjusted to specs.

I worked on some small tractors wit 2 cyl. diesels and they all seem to knock, but one mitsubishi in particular was very bad. The noise was in the muffler.

2nd thought after the 1st reply was posted. Put the tractor on a dyno and pump set at stock flow. If there is something wrong, she won't make rated power. I've seen a bunch of tractors, generators, road vehicles etc that "run good". Put them under a known measured load and the sick ones show up in a hurry.

I had the wrist pin bushes replaced when the motor was rebuilt.
The motor runs well and seems to have full power (18HP)It is fitted to a Lanz Alldog tractor. The problem is that this is the only one in Aust, and the fact that I have spent a heap of money on it to fix it up sourcing most parts from Germany and I dont want to destroy the engine.

If it puts out 18 HP on a real dyno. Then use and enjoy the tractor. We seen some odd Mannheim tractors here that the Yanks never did like the 510,710,2120,2130,1840,3130 etc. That two cylinder Lance is a mystery.

Timing too advanced will create knocking.Timing too retarded will cause rapid heat builduup. Adding oil to fuel will change it to knock even worse.Timing should be kept ot manufacturers specs in a stock motor.when people squeeze a little more power from an engine with timing changes this is less than 5 degrees either way.Any more than that I think your asking for trouble.

Since you are talking about injector timing and I was Talking about ignition timing disregard my input.Sorry.

What make and model is that engine ? Did you put in new crankshaft bearings set to specs. ? Is your flywheel tight ?

Hi Mike M,
The motor is a MWM KD211Z of german make. The crankshaft was ground and the bearings are of one part which were repoured and then machined round to suit the specs of the shaft.
The flywheel is very tight. It is on a tapered shaft held by a single nut.

What material was used to pour the bearings. Babbitt bearings and diesel stresses are not good combinations. Look in bearing catalogs, How many diesel bearings do you see where babbitt is the main bearing material. We had a case one time where babbitt bearings wer furnished for gas engines and copper-lead for the diesel. Well someone put the wrong ones in the wrong box. The engine ran less than 10 hours before it knocked.

The bearings were done by an experienced engine rebuilder who has been in the trade for 40 years.I presume he knows what he is doing as he rebuilds all types of motors both antique and modern day diesels, petrol and high performance dragster motors on a daily basis .

You had me scared, though it was a 720 two cylinder that was being reved to 2000rpm. After rebuilding both my 2-53 Detroit with higher compression pistons. And restoring compression on the 70 diesel Deere with new over size pistons, valves & seats. Both of those engines clatter something fierce compared to how they sounded before rebuilding and running with less cylinder pressure.

Paul, diesel engines all have their knocking charactoristic due to compression ignition, is there another one around you can listen to and see if it makes the same noise. do you have it on a generator or something and find it annoying when trying to sleep? cheers for now.
