When did 5w20 hit the market?

I have always used 10w30 or 5w30 in my car. Was told the other day at the oil change shop that 5w20 was the recommended oil for my car.

Had never heard of it, just wondering what you guys think.

The reason for 5w-20 oil is that ford has hardened the engine parts so a thinner oil can be used and you get better milage to boot. But using a heavier oil in a motor can cause bearings to fail belive it or not so I would stick with the 5-20 and not worry .Walmart sells it cheap if you like to change it your self.

Its been around for a while. It was first brought out to help improve mileage by reducing windage loss and on engines and I believe it has been around at least 10 years. My wife's 1999 Subaru requires it.

i'm guessing you drive a ford product? ford 5w20 synthetic blend has been out for about three years now. they recommend it in every motor except the 4.0L in rangers and explorers all the way back to '93. i don't agree with ford on that. if your vehicle is newer(around '97-'98 and up), use it. the newer motors have such tight tolerences oil doesn't always reach the right parts. dodge also came out with 5w20 on their new 300c, magnum and caravans ('05). just my experiance from working for a ford/dodge dealer for the last five years.

That would make sense, I drove a Ford Ranger with the 4.0 the last 4 years. Just switched to an '01 Taurus. Been getting oil changed at the same place during this time, thought it was kind of strange they all of a sudden wanted to change oils on me. Thanks for the reply.
