My Dad worked at clay tile factory off & on for 35 years. i spent early work years allso. Made lots of sewer pipe,drain tile& chiminy flus. Tons of it still in ground today.

Early drain pipes were made out of tile pipe, like our old sewer lines. Many still are. The rock shaft is the large shaft that is the guts for 3 point hitches.(The shaft that rotates and causes the 3 point hitch to rise or fall.) That's what I always called it. I could be and probably am wrong.

Outside the city, sewage is treated by digestion in the ground. A porous clay tile drain field worked pretty well for that.
