Thinking about updating to a late 90's 379 Pete. Most of them I see for sale have Cat engines. Just wondering if they were known to have any problems or if there were any to stay away from. Thanks for the comments.

About 75% of the Pete's built here in Madison TN have the Cat engines in them. That is for a reason, they have had the best luck with the Cats than any other engines installed. Of course all the engines are very reliable now but you get a bad one every once in a while...

dont rule out a cummins or detroit.neither one has a history of bowing up at 500,000 miles.dont know which one is the best selling engine anymore but its not the cat.fuel economy and weight are a big factor in sales.i had a 97 fld frightliner that i traded in 2001 that had 700,000 plus on it.could cruise at 80 mph and a steady 6.5 mpg.was a 470 series 60.just about every major fleet will run a detoit or cummins.cost, fuel economy and weight are the major reasons.whatever you upgrade for ,get it dyno tested if you aretrying to make a living with it.you will get a pretty good idea of what shape it is in and what it will do powerwise. my 2 cents

You are correct about most fleets running Detroits or Cummins. Reason, cheaper. Check out the custom or pretty trucks and most seem to have Cat's. Reason, power and reliability.

i recommend 855 cummins. theres so many around finding remaned injectors water pumps etc etc are easy and cheap ive driven ones and usually around 6.5 to 6.1 maybe 7 if you get the wind in the right direction but that was with one turned up to 525 all the way and start and stop driving or if it was going itd be going about 65 w/4.11 gears which doesnt help anything too much. my vote would be for 855 cummins alot of parts availability alot of cummins shops

I am thinkin the 855's are old school, N series are then newer models but I may be wrong. And there are a billion Cat 3406's and parts out there!

What for engine is it? C-12 or (3406E C-15 or C-16 all basically the same) what for Hp and mileage a Cat dealer. Most Pete's if driven right will get about 5.5mpg, even the 550's. If you get the serial number, your Cat dealer can run it and tell you what engine work was done. As you can imagine I've seen about all types of problems. We have seen a number of head gasket failures, but other than that they are pretty solid. If I was an owner operator, I wouldn't have anything but a Cat. I have been amazed with what they have stood behind. They had some problems with cranks breaking. We had several engines out of warranty with over 500k miles on that Cat help pay to remove the engine and install a new crank. If any engine is taken care of mainly coolant additives and changing oil, they will last for a million miles. High hp S-60 Detroits will eventually blow up over 500k miles. A guy had two that blew up in the same truck within a year. Guess what, it has a fresh 3406E with a 2 year 200K mile warranty.

I have driven trucks with all 4 brands of motors ,it comes down to maintance if this pete has over 600,000 check the bottom end if this has not been done will be due soon. A 3406 will run a long time as long as you don't turn it up sky hi and run it flat out all day ,and use the jake break as little as possiable this knocks many miles off the engine like.

most of the newer engines are million mile engines on the average.look long and hard at the newer trucks to get the most fuel eeicient one you can.when you see fuel prices steadily climbing and no end in site id rather havethe money in my pocket than to be driving a guzzler.pretty long nose are not the most efficient out there.my 2 cents

we have 2 in a 86 and 90 IH both 3406Bs ,,You probably have an electronic engine if in the late 90s,,any who, I like ours ok, I have had cummins and detroits all were older though and I like the cats better,,pertty much all the later engines can make it to the million mile mark before any big problems,if they are treated good,,my 2 cents,,,,, ,,,,billy

WE have an 84 Pete w/3406.
Had been set at 425 HP and ran accordingly for years.
Recently had to cut it back to 350 hp to comply w/ emissions.
Condidered replacement as needed the HP.
Found a engine specialist that reworked the intercooler , fuel pump, and Dyno tuned to 400 hp at the wheel with emissions compliance.
Needless to say we are happy to have saved a major expense and can climb hills very handily again.
We have short local runs, so mileage is approx. 400,000 miles in 21 years, but this engine still has much life left in it.
