I have an 1982 Bobcat 843 (Perkins Diesel) in the shop right now getting the main seals replaced, due to severe oil leakage. I'm new to diesels, as this was my first piece of equipment with a diesel. Problem is, even sitting in a heated garage (6o degress F), it needs ether assist to start. When I just unloaded the skidsteer at the diesel repair shop, the mechanic said it sounds like the engine spins way too easily, and the hard starts in warm temps are likely the result of low compression. He stated that it may be a good idea to replace the rings, and have a valve job done on it. Just wondering what you folks think..worth the money, or should I think about getting the seals fixed, and going with something a little newer? Thanks all

Most of the time, when I overhaul, I wind up being money behind over selling and replacing. But..... ..... .., what you replace it with could be in the same shape.

have him do a compression test and cylinder leakdown test to find out where the problem is. Does it smoke a lot on start up? He is correct hard start in high temps ould be compression, but what is causing the low compression, Could be rings, could be valves burnt and/or carboned up

Yes, it does smoke alot on startup, then seems to stop after it warms up. Seems to have good power, and runs great for hours.

If that Perkins starts hard something is wrong. The 843 could have the Perkins or Isuzu engine. The perkins always started easy and the Isuzu needed warming or ether. HTH Nat
