Cleaning top level of a layer barn. I need advice on what is the most practical machine for cleaning 11 months of good ol chicken poop out of the upper level. For efficiency i believe I need front assist compact hydostatic with foot controls and a joy stick loader control. Please share your opnions. I want to rent this year as opposed to purchase. Any one out there have one of these barns.

Well 16000 birds do make a lot of fertilizer over a year. They make way too much $$$$ to use a match and the manure really improves the soil. There are I believe 6 holes that we will need to carry/push into for the spreaders below. Bottem will be 2 skid loaders. I was hoping for some feedback on tractor brands/styles pros and cons. The goal is to get one floor done/day. Crap will go on my feild unless some one makes a good offer on it. I appreciate the helpfull resposes

You could do like the chicken farmer did in my area in the late 50's. Offer a couple school kids 50.00 each to clean under his chickens. Chicken crap piled three ft deep. This was the worst job I ever tackeled. We stuck it out to the finish though. Never again, Stan

As previously stated the dust and odor makes for miserable working conditions. Now think of what it's doing for your entire respiratory tract. Not to mention all the lung secretions and the dirt they carry out that is automatically swallowed without our knowledge. MMMMMmmmmm mmm... Old farmers that didn't smoke still had their lungs ruined by mold, dust and airborne chemicals like ammonia. Perhaps damp it down, wear a premium mask. Not the p.o.s. white over the face cheapo's either. And use a small skid steer.

May sound weird but wet that dried chicken poo real good first and it will move a lot easier. That dried stuff is like cement. It will smell bad but at least you are not getting the dried poo dust in your nose.

A local place uses a small tractor with a roto tiller to loosen it up,then a rear blade to remoe it.

I agree with jhill, a small skid steer would be the machine of choice, you should be able to rent one at several places.

The original Bobcat loader was a 3 wheel affair and was invented by a guy just for what you are wanting to do. If your floor is strong enough I would think a small skid steer would work great for what you want to do.

After being around and helping my father inlaw in a large two story broiler operation in the late 1950"s, the match was my first thought. Aluminum scoop shovels was the tool of the time with eyes watering. The big coop was 230 feet long, both floors. Could not eat a chicken for years, bout all I eat now so maybe ya oughta might keep the match in your pocket.
