I have 4 tractors, value of approx $12,000, they are stored at my dad's...I cant get insurance on them...agent says that unless they are appraised no one will insure them..even when they are appraised, insurance will be hard to get because they arent on my place.

I dont show them, only transport them rarely, should I worry about insurance? I am concerned about fire and barn collapse, etc.
Thanks!

I think that insurance is highly overrated, at least in some contexts. You should definitely have liability insurance (which you probably already have through your homeowners)- but insuring a $2,000 tractor for its own value is generally just foolishness- The chances of a piece of iron being destroyed is pretty remote, so why insure it? If its just a hobby piece, just suck it up and buy another one if you want to. We needn't be anal about everything we do. I have owned about 40 tractors in my life, and have never insured a single one; I have probably saved enough money in the process to buy several replacements should there have been a loss. Take a chance for once- its exhilarating.

Is this a farm policy? in reply to John M, 02-01-2005 17:15:05
I have nationwide - not a farm policy, just homeowners and they say they cant insure them.

same here. after all the threads on this i called my agent (Nationwide) and he said they would be covered. i asked how they would determine the value, and he said they would check any tractor price guides they could find as well as reference current sale prices for a similar tractor. i do believe the chances of damage are fairly rare, but if they were stolen that would be the biggest problem. although the chances of that where i live are also pretty rare.

Mines a little goofy. On two,my Dads restored M and my restored Cub, I took out a seperate policy on each that covers up to 5000 on each.On 4,they are whats considere3d working tractors and are covered under my homeowners policy for up to like 1200 each.My F14 is a totolly different thing. Its under their rare and antique auto policy.Between those,my car and truck and my hopmeowners,I pay about 3 grand a year.Fortunately they let me make monthy payments and most times I pay a couple of months.

Try State Farm. I had almost the same problem. Got the tractors on a Marine policy with State Farm now.

Markus - Whatever you decide to do , by all means get them appraised. I had a major conflict with my insurance company over a settlement after a tractor fire. I had valued all my equipment at the average retail price in the major farm paper here in Ontario, looking at possible replacement cost if I had a claim and covered my equipment at that level. I take good care of my equipment and expected to be able to replace any damaged equipment with something of equal quality.
Fought for over 2 months with a adjuster who didn't know squat about farm equipment, only cars. Finally settled , about $2000 short of what I though was fair because I needed a tractor right away. Needless to say , I am no longer with that company. If each piece had been appraised, I'd have had more to go on other than trust.

I suppose that would be great advice. Whether or not someone gets them added to their home policy, or a seperate policy on just the tractors, or whatever, probably would be a good thing to get them appraised. Sure would be bad to have what happened to you... Although yours wasn't a total loss, was a loss nonetheless.

Thanks for the tip.

Something else that might come into play, is if uses a "broker". Used to do that, once upon a time. They looked at what I had, and picked my "perfect" company for me. OK, I guess. Was ok for a couple of years, then one day got a policy and bill from a different company, and was DOUBLE the cost of the other. Hmm? I tossed it away, since I didn't contact them in the first place. Then got another from them, so called and asked what's the deal. They told me that my broker changed me to them. I called my broker and asked why they did that, and for DOUBLE. Straight up they told me the truth, and then lied. First told me that moved me into a more expensive company (I knew that), MetLife, because my other, Prudential, had been absorbed by them . Hmm? So I called Prudential, and they assured me hadn't been absorbed by MetLife or anyone else. Then I called the broker back and said, "Prudential is still in business, you lying ... merely moved me into a more expensive company to suppliment or offset your bad drivers you rotten ...". They offered to find me a cheaper deal, if I'd like. Hmm!?!? So, I did the right thing and went to a real insurance company, State Farm, and have been dealing with them directly, for less, for years now. The kicker? MetLife, whom I didn't contact in the first place, told me that I'd have to write them to cancel their policy, otherwise they'd have to cancel it themselves and show me as a "dropped" client, which would "put a blemish on my record" if I didn't. I told them to go pound sand, and wrote them nothing, not admitting to the existance of a policy that I didn't ask for or want in the first place.

Get an appraisal, have a reputatable insurance company to deal with directly. Just my thoughts.

Mark

I've got my tractors insured thru this same company. Costs $57 per year per tractor for $500K liability plus no deductible on an agreed upon ACV replacement. Only downside to this company is they only insure in certain states. Larry

I got the MH Pony insured and it lives over at Mom's right now. I'll get you the name and phone number of my agent if you want. The local Ford dealer "appraised" the Pony out of the book for the needed value.

Try Farm Bureau insurance, I've got fire, theft, vandalism, etc on mine with my farmowners. Costs about $7.00 per $1000 in coverage.

I have my tractors and boat covered under my personal property insurance through Auto Owners, and just like you, they are stored at a different location.

Hay is correct. I had trouble getting a policy to cover my tractor that is kept 250 miles from my home. Talked to my insurance agent, and he admitted that it would be covered on my home owners policy as "personal property" as long as I don"t use it for profit.

Worth looking into.

I have had all my recent tractors insured primarily because they were stored off my property. I was glad I did because my IHC B was stolen. I am with Farmers Insurance Group and they settled within 10 days after I was able to prove the value of the tractor. I did this by having the adjuster cALL up this site and check the prices on tractors advertised in the photo ads.

I would be skeptical that a std homeowners poicy would cover a farm tractor without at least a special rider
