off topic here, but I need some help regardless. I had the throttle body/ air intake off my 98 blazer 4.3, replacing the fuel pressure regulator. I got it back together, but it sounds like it has an irregular air leak. I looked over everything that I messed with, tried spraying some carb cleaner/ wd40 around on the joints, couldn't find anything? Any other ideas? Thanks Hound

One place to check is where fuel lines go into upper plenum cover. That o-ring gets pinched alot.
I made my own poor mans smoke machine. Used cylinder leakage tester, the kind with two guages and regulator. took piece of heater hose stuck quick connector in one end .Found brass fitting that fit in other end that had a small nipple on it to attach to vac line.On hose side of fitting i drilled it out enough to hold a small cigar, . light cigar , stick fitting in hose, turn air up slowly to get smoke , hook up to vac line and any leaks will have smoke coming out !!! works great .

Call around to shops in your area and find out who has a smoke machine. They can hook it up and find the leak in under 5 mins

If it seems to run Okay the you may just be hearing the IAC Idle Air Control valve. Is the air cleaner still off? Try installing it and see if it sounds better. May not be a problem at all.

Hound, It can be kind of tricky to get that upper intake on without pinching a wire or vacuum hose. You may need to take it back off and check that the gasket is properly aligned, but first, check that the vacuum hose at the back corner of the manifold is not cracked or loose. That one has given me the most problem in the past. Good Luck and God Bless, Tommy

Hi Ol' Bud,

Did you replace that base gasket?

And if so, did you put the right one on? There are different gaskets for different engine sizes even tho the TB looks the same and they have always been a problem for leaking.

Does the engine idle too fast?

Allan

It doesn't run fast nor does it idle rough or irratic. It just sounds like "an air leak". You can slap me, I didn't change the o-ring gasket on the air manifold, I didn't know about it. I assumed it would be some type of "normal" gasket that I could reuse/ reproduce or I would have got a new o-ring gasket set...and not many parts stores open Sunday night at 11:00. I had never took one of these apart before. (What a PITA!). Thanks. Hound
