I bought a tandem axle 7000# gvw trailer cheap but it doesn't have any brakes. From web research it looks like I should buy 10" by 2.5" electric brake assemblies and new drums/hubs. My question is how standard are the spindles and bearings? I can't find any identification on the axles. If I order the right bolt pattern will the hubs fit my spindles? What should I measure to be sure I order the correct parts? Any recommended suppliers?

I had the "same deal" a couple years ago. Priced all the parts vs a complete axle from a trailer suply house. The complete axle wasn't that much more - don't remember the numbers.

I'm glad with my choice. Took less time to replace axles than to do all the pieces - got new bearings and seals as well.

If you have anyone that manufactures or sells utility trailers in your area, check with them. Frequently you can buy a complete axle cheaper than the 2 brake assemblies. Same goes for Tractor Supply, they usualy have axles with brakes cheaper than individual brake units. P.S. if you do add the brakes yourself, there is a right and left, if you get them reversed you have lousy brakes.

Go to the nearest Tractor supply and take a look at their axles on display. If your axle has the same four holed square bracket on it as the ones they sell, you should be able to purchase the same brakes as fit their axles, from TSC or anyone who sells the same brand.

You may find if you have an oddballsetup , a new pair of axles would be the least costly way to go. Then you can sell the old axles to someone building a lighter trailer.

In Va. it would have to have had trailer brakes once to be registered it may be that way in Md. any trailer over 3500lbs capacity must have brakes in Va.
