I'm getting worried reading these posts and looking at that tractor-tipping site. Does anyone have a plan or a picture of a workable ROPS for a MF35 - type tractor?

Thanks.

My 35 had a rops made out of 2 7/8 drill pipe (oil well) welded to a steel plate (looked like 1/4" or so) which was bolted to (around) the axle housings. Seems something went wrong (over the years) as by the time I got the tractor someone had taken a torch and cut it off.

May have been that the owner was using the tractor to mow and couldn't get under trees (exhaust is out the rear) so he cut it off.

For a rops to really work, you also need a good seat and use a seat belt to hold you in place "while you roll".

My solution is pushing the tires out, proper drawbar techniques, and on some tractors front weights. All this plus staying keenfully aware of the "tipover box" that the CG has to remain inside to keep you right side up. Course, you never know when you'll hit a rock, or slide down a hill and hit something causing the overturn.

Common sense goes a long way as does staying alert as to what can cause one. Also reducing speed to only what's necessary (especially road gear) helps too.

Good luck

Mark

I would not even think about fabricating a ROPS unless you are capable of calculating the stregth of the materials and construction technique of the ROPS. Finding a plan for a home made one is probably not something you will find. Way too much liability there. Here is a link to a site where you can purchase ROPS. A MF dealer can also get one for you. And I would definitely recommend one.

Before you build your own, read this.

Not a nice sight. About all I can say. My Idea would be to bolt around the axle with the long bolts like the original, with a cold rolled plate under the bottom; like the fenders are installed on Fords, but I am amazed at how the axle cast housing broke open. Would have thought if something were to yield, it would have been a cast ear would break off, not the whole housing top.

I know the grandpa is remourseful. What a pitty.

O.K., that's scary.

A question emerges: granted, the post-pulling technique mentioned in the fatality report is pretty deadly, but if the tractor's differential were locked when attempting the pull, would the tractor have tipped over as quickly? Would it be only half as deadly?

We just finished cutting the bolts off the fenders on my MF35 to install a loader carriage underneath. Those are formidible bolts. So the problem with this failed ROPS was the inadequate fastening system, not the bar itself. That makes a lot of sense.

Thanks for the advice and the link.
