Could someone please tell me what the traction booster on my 1953 Allis Chalmers does?

Thank you.

The traction boost lever is used to transfer draft from the implement, plow, disk , cultivator, for more traction. I would get an owners manual so you know how to use it. They are not very expensive.

Have fun

It works by sensing the "pull" on the loop connection underneath the tractor on snap-coupler implements. If the tractor begins to pull too hard, the system lifts the snap coupler arms to reduce the draft of the implement. Virtually the same as the draft sensing on a Ford or Ferguson 3 point hitch, but with a "bottom link" instead of "top link" sensing the draft.

YOu may want to post on the Allis board, but my guess that it locks the differential, so that both rear wheels have traction without slippage

Sorry Dave, The Traction Booster is more closely related to the Ferguson System than it is to anything in the drive train. It was adjusted by a lever that looked like the mirror image of the throttle lever and had a hydraulic pressure gauge to monitor the system. I can just hear newbies to the AC saying "so thats what that other lever is for" I also say get the book. Ed

It simply transfers weight from the implement to the rear of the tractor to give it more traction.
