Need a 40 horse steam engine

The living-history museum where my wife works is looking to buy a 40 horsepower, horizontal, side-crank steam engine. Preferably an Onieda, but at this point, they will consider any make. The museum has an overshot water-powered grist and saw mill, and at one time it also had a steam engine for backup power during low-water conditions. The engine has been missing for years, and they are looking to install steam power again. They are just about to the point of having a replica custom-made, but it will cost a fortune. The boiler tank was just completed, and the stack is up - waiting for an engine.

Horsepower of a steam engine is determined mainly by the pressure and volume of the steam your boiler produces. I think you would have been wise to acquire your engine before building your boiler.

Doesn't work that way in this case. This is for a museum and they are replacing what was once there, but is now missing. They replaced the original boiler with a new one of the same appearance and specifications as the old boiler, same for the stack, and are already certified for the pressure they need (both the boiler and the operators). Original engine was an Oneida that was advertised, in its time, as a 40 horsepower engine. Their first choice is to find an Oneida the same as what was there originally, but at this point, they'd use another make with similar ratings, bore, and stroke. We understand the correlation between pressure and horsepower.

Can you give a contact number or website? Most threshing clubs have engines that they haven't got enough volunteers to fix up. And they need money. For example, the club I belong to has a big Corliss just sitting in parts. Old hospitals, old hotels, old prisons, and old dairys had these engines and they are gradually being torn down. Some are broken up for scrap because the freight elevators can't lift them out of the basements.

Seems this website automatically erases (without warning) any post that contains a website URL, so the museum's site is at - "three w's, hanfordmills, "dot" org Sorry, seems pretty silly that I have to play mental games with this forum's software. My wife's email at the museum is hanford2@handfordmills (dot org). Her name is Caroline. We're looking for serious and fair offers. We can get a reproduction engine built somewhere in the $20,000 - $30,000 price range - so it makes no sense to pay $15,000 - $20,000 for an old engine and then as much again restoring it. We've already got a 10" X 10" which I thing is around 22 horsepower. We need something in the 40 horsepower range.

I see from the website's schedule of events that a July 4th debut is planned for the new steam engine... Good luck to you in meeting this goal -- the museum looks like something every area should have to remind folks of the way things were done before the advent of Wal-mart (i.e., if you wanted a basket/quilt/hinge or whatever, you made it yourself). Hope you find a suitable candidate for restoration, and soon -- and be sure to let us know how you make out! -- Maine Fordson

That's not really the case. The "debut" will be for steam power in general, with a demonstration using the new boiler and stack hooked to a small (10 horse rating) steam engine that is nowhere big enough to run the saw mill. Been looking for a 40 horse engine for a couple of years now - and just about ready to give up and have a new replica built. They are looking to buy an engine at a reasonable and fair cost - but in all honesty, don't have money to throw away. It's a small museum working mostly from grants and donations. It's one the few original water powered mills left in this area and gets pretty good local support.

I have a Corinth horizontal steam engine, it is about 90% complete and needs restoring. I do not know the horsepower but it has a 10 inch bore and 10 inch stroke. It is located in Mississippi. $10,000 gets it.

Our local tractor club once toured the Root bee keeping supply in Medina Ohio. I think they had one maybe even two in there basement. Removeing them was the main reason they still had them.It might be worth checking out to see what is going on with them. This was awhile back they could even be gone by now.I don't have the phone number I may be able to give you someones that does.E-mail me mrmegm@allvantage.com

If your state has steam boiler instpectors, I wonder if they could give you some ideas where such a unit might be found?

I certainly don't want to hijack you thread, but I saw a unique steam related item on Ebay last week.
It was a gas valve for regulating the flow of fuel into a gas fired boiler. No steam pressure and the valve was fully open allowing a full flow of gas. As steam pressure built the additional pressure forced the valve further closed. Maybe that is the norm, but I've not dealt with steam before.

Good luck to the museum and your quest.

Yes, and the inspection has been done for what is up so far. Just had a reproduction boiler and stack made and inspected. Also had to have the mill foreman get certified for what ever pressure level it's going to be. Inspection requirements allow a rivetted boiler if it's original, but not for a new one. New boiler has immitation rivets just for show. They didn't have any suggestions for the engine except for having a reproduction made new, which is very expensive.

Just got off google found a number for A I Root Co. 1-800-289-7668 won't hurt to call and ask for one of the owners and see if they still have the engines. They are into making candles now.
