hi, i have about 40 acres out in western NY and i need a tractor to mow it with. I am going to be useing a brush hog so i fugured i needed something with a good amount of power. I had a farmer useing the land but he went out of bussiness. It hasent been mowed for a year and since we did have someone farm the grass is very tall. There are two tractors i am looking at right now and im not sure which one or nethier would be the better choice. There is a Ford 61 which is assume is a Ford 611? The add says "Ford 61,3PT, high and low,4spd,Power steering, New 12v batt., good tires, rear main oil leak? $2500 firm" The other is an international 300. This ad says " International Farmall 300,wide front end, w/loader, needs minor work. $2300." I was just wondering what you guys think would be the better tractor for the job or if you think they are not good choices at all. I dont mind working on them either and i have to be able to haul it with my truck. Thanks Emil

Boy, for a bunch of tractor guys I can't believe everyone missed the obvious. This man is asking for advice concerning tractors and he didn't even list a tractor to choose from. If it don't say "John Deere" it's just a wanna be. Now go buy a nice 2510, 3020 or 4020 and you'll have a rig to be proud of.

Now let the games begin!!!

Depending on how fast you want to mow and the topography, I have 3 comments:

1. If you are in a hurry when you mow neither will do. Need a big rig to cover a lot of ground fast; like Jonboy said..... but you ain't goin to get there for $2500.

2. If you have lots of what I call bumps in your field where the mower would miss here and scalp there, you want a mower that is smaller so that it can follow the contours. Otherwise you will be replacing your PTO gears regularly; slip clutch or no slip clutch on the mower. Having had both, 3 pt is the style of choice for lots of reasons.

That could mean the 601 with a 5' rotary cutter...Good match and good utility tractor. Rear main seal leak is not that bad as long as it isn't so bad that it gets into your clutch.....and probably won't. Power steering is nice but unnecessary on that small a tractor especially with a 3 Pt mower (takes the load off the front axle somewhat) which I would recommend for that size.

3. If you think you will need the added advantage of moving things about; i.e. front end loader, and aren't in a hurry, the IH may be right, again depending on what minor work means. Thing about a loader, is that they are nice when you need one, if you need one; and are in your face otherwise. If you are talking about the 300 UTILITY, that's one thing; nice and handy. If you are talking about the 300 ROW CROP, that is a field tractor and not handy around the place like the 601 or 300U would be.

The 300U is around 42 HP as I recall and would run a 6' cutter nicely.

I have had large and small cutters and having digested myself of all but one, my mower of choice is a 35 hp massey (same basic setup as the 601) with a 5' mower. Time is not important as I'm retired, but that is an easy handling, easy to get around very nice rig. Otherwise I use my JD 9' swather.

Good luck

Mark

Mornin' Mark,

Yes Sir, a guy has to be careful in this respect. One man's 40 acres means a fairly good sized field.

Someone else in a different region might be mowing miles and miles of a 8 foot tree row.

Can't second guess, I'm a thinkin'

Allan

Hello Allan,

I kept getting bigger and as we are talking about the topography got in the way. I mow 40 acres in one lot now with this 5' rig and it doesn't take all that long and I get a good job. Plus I can mow the whole thing with 1 mower; along the fence, around the water tanks, thru the trees, over the terraces and all the bumps in the dirt. Can't really plow it smooth as next year it will be back lumpy and it is on the side of a hill and being leased, I don't want to spring for the terracing cost.

Thing I like about it (5' rig) is it's the cheapest rig so out of pocket is the least and repairs (aren't any currently) but when they happen will be the lowest dollar.

Best,

Mark

Depending on "minor work" the IH with loader is a no brainer.

40 acres thats a lot of mowing, myself having hogged hundreds of acres would perfer something more like a 706 or 806 they have plenty of power and they won't beat the crap out of you and with a 7ft chopper will be a good load for 1 of these tractors.

Morning Leland,

Boy, I'm havin' trouble gettin' my mind wrapped around knockin' down 40 acres with a bush hog too, especially if it is tall, heavy growth.

I'f a feller is gonna use a rotary mower, looks like one of these batwings and a bigger tractor would be a far better choice. (Picture courtesy of Sloroll in IA)

Dunno,

Allan

Yeah 40 acres is certainly a whole lot of mowing, but he might run into problems with a batwing like I would here, a batwing wouldn't be very practicle for me because it won't fit in between trees in the old pasture. I'd say it would be rather foolish if he has 40 acres of nice open land not to crop it, put it into hay or something, try to make alittle money off it, brush hogging it is going to cost him money.
JMHO...

I agree Allan this poor man does not realize how much work he has ahead of him with a small chopper 4 maybe 5' at the most.I think I would spray it with a burn down and no till it if it was my 40 acres.

Yep,

Hope I don't get in trouble for saying this, but I think that 40 acres is just about the dividing line between the little lawn mower tractors and a real field tractor.

Just my view and my 2¢

Allan

40hp meets the requirments for most brush hogs (rotary cutters to be more accurate) out there, unless you want a 20ft batwing or something, then you'd best be looking at a 75-80hp tractor or alittle larger. For a 6ft brush hog, good fuel economy, great size for hobby farming, I'd suggest about 40hp. I don't know what attachments you're thinking of getting, but if you wanted a rototiller or think your going to get into bailing, live hydrolics and pto is a real nice feature, and power steering is always a plus. I also like hydrolic assisted brakes.

As for a Ford 61, I'll bet thats a typo and it's a 601, I don't believe there is such a thing as a Ford 61, unless the seller meant 1961 as in the year it was built.
Hope this helps!

Everyone is saying bushhog and huge one, but a sickle bar or mounted drum or disc mower would be a lot faster and use less power (fuel) Since it has been worked recently there aren't big rocks likely.

We have a 6 ft bh on a 52 hp international and the worse stuff to try and bush hog is overgrown hay. The mower conditioner breezes through it though as it isn't trying to wrap it up.

Of course the mower condition doesn't like brush over about 1/2" where the bush hog eats up big stuff.
