Can you use regular plumbers pipe thread tape on threads exposed to gas or oil?

I've had good luck with leak lock. It seems to cut right through oil. I rebuild refrigeration compressors (carrier) and its good enough to seal in refrigerant.

Personally, I hate teflon tape especially in applications where there is a possibility of teflon tape bits plugging a port or jet.

Rectorseal 5 or Gasoila Soft Set is my ticket with Gasoila being the better of the two. Gasoila's name pretty much tells you it's OK for the your application.

Hi BB,

Yes teflon tape is a UBC (Uniform Building Code) approved pipe thread sealant for gas or oil.

Tape or soft sealant must start one thread from the end of pipe (this stops sealant from entering into the pipe) and tape sealant must wrap a minimum of three times around the threads (I like 5 wraps).

That is if the sealant mfg meets the UBC code requirements. Some cheap brands of sealants do not apply for code ratings thus can not be used.

Sorry my brain won't kick out the plumbing code marking, ie; like UL.

I think the only place where teflon tape works good is on plastic. For metal I use the past sealer. Stan

The only trouble with teflon tape is that bits tear loose while tightening and sometimes get to plug things like carburetor jets and needle valves.

I've used white teflon for gasoline successfully.

The better seal is Rectorseal. It holds oil up to hydraulic system pressures and holds LP gas and liquid as well as water.

Ace Hardware has it in tubes along with regular pipe dope. It specifically lists it as being able to use with gas etc.

Somehow I think that the "white" teflon tape isn't as good on petroleum applications (gas, oil, etc) as the "yellow" teflon tape. I might stand to be corrected on that.

Blue:
I think you can--- however--- I bought some that specifically stated that it could be used on gas applications.. i think i'd use that to be safe. (By the way it worked great!)
