Any recommendations on which tractor would be more reliable, a JD 8640 or a Steiger Cougar CR 1225 (225 horse)? The JD has a little more horsepower, but I've not heard much good about their engines, while the Steiger has a Cat 3306, which I've heard good things about.

I'm looking to be able to pull a 5 shank V or inline ripper for deep tillage, plus other normal tillage use (disk, field cultivator). For a 650 acre farm.

Any suggestions? BTW, the Deere has 5000 hrs, 18,500$. the Steiger is listed at 32000$, with 6500 hrs.

Thanks!

I have owned a KR1225 since new which is identical to the one you are looking at except mine has the K (Cummins L10)engine. The machine has been absolutly trouble free in 5000 hrs.
The one your looking has to be an 85 model, right ?
This is what the Steiger model number means.

C= Cat engine. R= 20 spd ranger transmission with built in wet clutch, made by Allis challmers and used in their larger 4WD models. The powershift part has a shift under power low/high range like a JD quad range.

1=1000 series tractor with the good cab and AC,plus air ride seat, and pressure and flow compensated hydraulics which are better than those on a 40 series JD.

225=225 flywheel hp.

The Steiger has 225 engine hp and the 8640 has 275 engine hp. The 8640 is a good machine but when you have to work on them the repair bills are huge. The Steiger is cheaper to work on and for the most part more reliable then the JD's of that era. I do know of some JD 30/40/50 series that have made 8,000 hrs with no problems. But it seems like for every one you find that was good, there were five that needed worked at 4,000 hrs. I would feel more comfortable buying a Steiger with 8,000 hrs then a JD with 5,000 hrs. The JD has better hydraulics. Also, I think the price on the Steiger is a little high. If you can get the seller of the Steiger to come down a little I would buy it providing they are both in equal condition.

Just for the record, over the years we have owned and run a JD 8440, 8850, 8960, and last year bought a 1982 Steiger CA 280 with 6,000 hrs for $25,000. You can't beat the Cat 3406.

How does that auto work? There is an Industrial Steiger about 10 miles from me and I just assumed it was just a different paint job. Rather interesting info here. Oh, and one of few engines I would rather have than that 3406 is a 3408!

The auto works just like one in a car. You have gears 1,2,2-3,2-4, and 2-5. There is no clutch. You just make sure the tractor is at an idle, put the lever in 2-4. Push the throttle lever all the way forward and the tractor will start grabbing gears until 4th. Then I back the rpms off to about 1800. If the tractor hits a hard spot and lugs down, it will drop back to 2nd gear. To get the other 5 gears there is another range.

Phil, First off, Both are good tractors. The Deere is pretty much a bullit proof tractor. The tractor should have had all JD up dates, primarily the secondary (bypass) oil filter, in addition the the regular one on the engine, The double lever Quad is a very good tranny also. Axles are good too.
The Stiger also is a good tractor. But is a compoent tractor, engines by cat, cummins, trannys by allison if my memory hasn't failed me, axles by Clark. A clutch can be replace in a Stiger in about 5 hrs.A Deere it is almost unhear of to have clutch trouble its a oil bath (wet) as oppose to the (dry) in the Stieger,
You didn't mention if bothe had duals, I would hope so.
Also I wouldn't own a 4x4 that didn't have a catIV 3 pt hitch. So if all is eueal and the only real difference is price, then which dealer is closest, If equal, which dealer is easier to get along with, more accomidating!
There is a lot of difference in 18K amd 32K. So if all is equal ..... go with the cheaper price.
I think you left out some important information for us to know,to aid in our opinion.
I will say now go with the Deere!
Later,
John A.

Axles were built by Raba except for the industrial versions. They used Eaton axles.

It will be a toss up.Both have good features, the Deere is somewhat more operator friendly, better a/c,more comfortable cab. The 619 is a good engine if it has had decent care and maintenance, and hasn't been overfueled or run hot.The rest of the drivetrain is plenty strong, if it has had good maintenance, fluid and filter changes and hasn't been cowboyed. Have the axles checked for bearing wear, and the hi/lo pressure checked. The Steiger is a little stronger drivetrain wise, and the Cat engine is about bulletproof if it has been maintained properly. The cab is noisier, not quite as comfortable, the hydraulics alittle slower, and you don't have the advantage of the no clutch hi/lo if you get in a tough spot.Your results with either one will depend on their previous homes and how they were taken care of. Either one will pull the V ripper,a 20-30' disc.Unless the Steiger has alot of service history with it,excellent rubber and appearance,it seems a bit pricey. We bought a PTA325 with the allison auto,5100 one owner hours, all the uptime services done, last year for 29000.

Okay,
They both have duals, the steiger has 18.4-38's radials with 30%, while the Deere has 24.5-32 bias that are mostly worn out. If we rip inline we would value the 18.4-38's in our ridge till pattern.
They both have 3 point hitches. The cab on the Steiger is the newer, Case style (lots of glass) with a probably reconditioned cab interior. I think the Steiger has hi-low powershift, it looked like a 20 speed.
