can anyone suggest a good brand/model to look for. I have a very non-existant budget and am moving into a house with an acre of land. I was thinking there has to be a model out there that is easy to get parts for, though its so rock solid I"d probably never have to work on it. Any tractor out there like that?

Any advice would be great, thanks.

Chuck

Jerry Baker the garden guru says the best lawn mowers are sheep ? They cut often and short and fertilize as they go.

In our family, I have been designated as "Official Lawn Mower Buyer" for the entire clan. They think I have some sort of magic formula for finding good used mowers....Well... I do.

I have a couple dealers I work with. About this time of the year, and on into summer, they get deluged with trade-ins. Some are from people who just HAVE to have a new mower every couple years. They get some good ones in, with little invested in them. I offer to take them at the trade value, and "help" keep the dealers inventory down. They don't have to service and/or store them that way. I've bought some really good mowers for $.50 on the dollar of what they COULD sell for that way.

Find a dealer that looks loaded down, and offer to buy one at trade-in price.... Can't hurt. (SOME dealers don't want a big inventory of used mowers... They "compete" with their efforts to sell NEW at full price. They'd rather just send 'em on down the line as quick as possible)

I got a Murray at Sams House of Horrors 8 years ago, its been a good one. Parts support through Murray has been great and it is easy to work on. My dad has a 30 year old Simplicity, great mower but its worn out and some parts have to be made. When I see them side beside at auctions the much older Simplicity brings what Murrays do.

You are looking for the impossible if you are looking for new. Follow the below advise, find a good old Cub, wheel Horse, or ?? John Deere, or Allis Chlamers, these tractors are virtually bulletproof and easy to work on and easy to get parts. As for new that is: rock solid, parts easy to get on a non existant budget, well it does not exist, you either get cheap, flimsy or expensive good.

I really like cub cadet, but the guys in the garden tractor post can help you better. There is a special on new cub cadets at my local dealer. He is selling them for pre 1996 prices and Im tempted to get a new one, but my 1450 is hard to give up. Although, its getting easier if you read my post on the garden tractor board.

I go with sloroll on this. Those older lawn tractors, even if you need to rebuild the engine, were so much better that the new throw-away lawn mowers. One I liked was a Deere 140H hydostatic.

Goats?? :? )

I fyou look you can find an old (70ish)name brand tractor reasonably priced. I bought a Cub Cadet for 300 recently. Easy to work on your self and the parts are fairly easy to come by. Same with Allis, Deere. If you avoid the newer stuff and off brands you should be OK.

Thanks for all the responses even though I posted this in the wrong forum. I guess I need to rethink my budget a bit, but the info you"ve given me is very valuable. Thank you all again.

Chuck
