Lost power this morning, I waited for what I felt was the appropriate length of time, and called it in. Did you know you can now report a power outage and never talk to a real live person? Also found out the cordless phone does not work when the power is out, DUH. Thankfully we have one phone that is still wired in the old fashioned way. Sometimes you need old technology just to use the new tech stuff.

Yep, but when the SLCK or Litespan down the road loses power, everyone loses their lines too. On those days, we just kind've back the truck up to one and power it with a generator so that all of them lines make it to those powerless cordless phones. LOL.

Hi Mark,

There are those who are of the opinion that I am suffering from a permanent power outage.

I can’t figure out what they mean by this? :>)

FYI : They do make a cordless phone that will still work when the power is out.We had one given to us and last power outage the crazy thing started ringing I picked it up and it was working ? Only thing I can figure is it was a high dollar model and it must have a battery in the base station too.

Yesterday, the power company called and told me that our old farm 20 miles from here would be without power for at least a month. Seems that the new road construction that is going on by it somehow severed the underground feed...which is now buried under 25 - 30 feet of new fill.
Hope I don't need to get a tractor charged up and started before then.

Don't know where you are, but that's true in our neck of the woods. Call Consumer's Power, (central Michigan) and you'll get no humans - and no good answers. And with the dependability of the system, and the slow response to repair requests, a generator is definitely in the needs column. Guy below gives good advice - 5500 watts, and 8 to 10hp is a good minimum size. Just unplug the stuff you really don't need. Heat, refrigeration and water plus a lightbulb or two will get you by. You probably don't need a fancy unit, although extended run and low oil shutoff are goood options to look for. 220Volt outlet is a must to run some water pumps, etc. You can spend the high bucks and get a premium unit (Honda or other top rated engine,) or get a cheaper Briggs, and get by just fine. Depends on whether you're going to be running construction projects, or just covering the homestead when the power goes down. I have the cheaper Briggs powered unit. Has been trouble free, and paid for itself many times over. How much does a freezer full of food cost if you loose it because of an extended outage? There's the cost of a cheap generator right there! Or how much of a problem is there if you can't get water for the animals? Yeah, generator is a need!

Yup, a B&S gen set got me thru 2004 Hurricane season here in FL. Life saver for food, well pump etc. When not doing hurricane duty it returns to its original life as power for my shop. Still saving $$ to get power run to the shop.

New construction home 2 yrs. ago and had placed plumbed and wired for a 25k LP unit but ain't got the $$ saved yet to get the gen set.

My luck is I get $10 in the bank and something breaks that costs $11.

Still chuggin' along. . .

Since I work in the industry I"ll let in on a little secret. If you don"t have a generator big enough to operate everything essential together at one time. GET ONE. If you can"t afford it, go without beer, liquor, smokes and dinners out for a couple of months. Then take the money you saved and purchase at least a 5500W unit.

Thank you for the heads up. A generator has been on my list of wants for several years. I think it just got moved to the list of needs.

It would have to run the furnace, we can live without the A.C. Rural water, so no pump to run. Electric water heater, would have to be smooth enough to run this computer, right now the PC is my livelyhood, it has to be up and running for at least 8 hours everyday.

When running electronics on a generator a UPS is real nice. Cleans up the gen power and gives you time to hook up the generator. Plus they are excellent for surge and lightening protection.
about $100 for a decent one.

If it goes like ours did, hang on to your jammies, 'cause you won't need sleeping pills anymore, that's for sure!

I open up at 3am and the wife shuts 'er down at 10pm. Work like a couple of dogs and it all goes to Uncle Sam and the State of Nebraska because we have nothing to deduct.

I think I need to get Dug to come be our CFP or somptin'. :>(

Oh well, it let me buy an old tractor, I guess. :>)

Don't know that much about taxes, over here we don't pay anymore after we think we have paid enough, but is sounds to me like you need to get you some...uh..... ..deductions. Maybe some aminals that eat a lot, need a lot of hired help to take care of, and maybe some expensive equipment to more them around or something. Just a thought mind you, not making any suggestions here or anything. Gotta stay away from the 2-bit word. :-) Harley
