I recently received a couple of emails about a tractor I was selling and they just didn't read well. After placing a fairly clear, explanatory ad on the classified, I got 2 seperate requests for a detailed describtion and pictures. Both people wanted to know my best price. I responded with pictures and said that the tractor was as described in the ad. Later that day I received the first response from the guy who wanted to send me an extra $200 to make sure no one else got the tractor. He also requested address and phone info that is on the ad already. I simply responded that the tractor was sold. About five minutes later I got the 2nd response from the other guy , who also wanted the same info. I declined his offer too. I have the names they were using if anyone runs into this scenario. Maybe it is just me, but if it smells like a skunk it usually is one.

What ever happened to the days of doing businss with a handshake? Seems there isn't any ethics left. I've done a lot of business the old fashioned way and still find some folks willing to do it that way. Just bought something this week from a fellow. He insisted on sending the item first, if I liked it, send the money if not, send the item back. I got the item and sent the money!

I have heard of this on Some bird message board I go to and other places. They will pretend to want info on the item for sale and ask for a lot of information and if they can get a enough they can start identity theft on you if you are to smart for that they go to plan B. Here is how it works, they send you the 200 or in one case it was 3,000 bucks extra for the item for sale. Usally they get the check to you on Saturday so you can not cash it till monday or a friday so when it comes back bad you are already sunk. Ok now you have the money for the tractor or what ever you are selling. then you get this message about a sick friend or his wife bought a lawn mower or some other bull that they are strapped and need the extra deposit back but you can keep the asking price and they will be there to pick up the tractor (or what ever) when planned. BUT they need the money back right away so could you wire it ( and You can keep some for the wire fee and your troubles cause these guys are real nice and honest) Now on Monday their check comes back as a closed account and you check with the wire company and the money was picked up and you try to contact the people but find out they don't exist. Some one below said you can't be scamed because 1: they don't know where the tractor is 2: they didn't get your bank account Info and 3: they didn't get the tractor till you had cash in hand. Well they don't care about the tractor, or car, or whatever you are selling or your bank account. Just another scam. Yes the nigerians are pulling it but so are a lot of american scumbags and probably a lot of other people.

I just got an email answer to an ad i put in here this morning, about Fraser tillers. The wording of the message made me think right away "SCAM!" He wanted to send $200 to hold them, then he'd bring a certified cashiers check to pay for them. He wanted pics, my full name, address, bank name, and a lot of other stuff that could get my bank ripped off! And me, too! He couldn't write many words correctly---looked like those nigerian scams i've read about! Guess where his message went! BY: Rustyj

I agree that sending you extra is confusing and unless it was deposit (which I wouldn't take anyway) would have passed them up to.

Now you want a real scam

I was in the market for a 351W motor for a pickup truck. After looking thru the paper I found one that sounded ideal. Made contact and setup a time to check it out. It was still in the car (wrecked) and I could here it run. Went to the appointemt, heard it run, and saw the damage the car. It didn't seem right, not enough damage to the rear end. I ask if he would be will to sell whole she-bang. The reply was "no, my buddy needs the interior and wheels for his car." Sounds reasonable, So now he says "I'll hold it if you put up a $200 deposit". I start smelling fish. I said "no, when can you have it ready to go, i'll bring cash". He setup a date to have it out but said if cash showed up he would sell it. I kinda wondered maybe he's on the up and up and should leave a deposit. In the end I didn't leave a deposit.

The day came to go pick up the engine. I called to see if it was ready and didn't get an answer. So I went by to see. I found an empty house, no car, pissed of landlord, and (via the landlord) no less that 7 people (I would have been #8) had given him a $200 deposit before he skipped town.

Could be on the up and up, but I doubt it. Their reply sound like a "canned" message. We are all ways hearing that people can't read or write. What they mean, is that they don't think...ie...What color is your red tractor? Could be this, but I bet it is scam. Like you say, some body is going to bite.

Your post doesn't outline a single thing that these guys did wrong. It is curious that the guy would offer $200 more than asking price only a short time after asking for your best price. It is always a bad idea to tell anyone the location of equipment via email. Still, there is nothing wrong with anything that occurred per your email.
Did they ask you to give the extra $200 to a third party? What is up that makes you so suspicious of them. Maybe they just REALLY want to buy your tractor? I am just puzzled because the post doesn't sound like the communications were all that sinister.

Mornin' Dave,

This reminds me of the day I bought my loader.

I spotted it on a dealers lot, went in and told them that I wanted to buy the loader, have them come out and get my tractor, take it back to town and mount the loader. Also to repair any bad hoses, etc. Then return the whole she-bang back to me out here in the wilderness.

Fine, no problem; will do.

I then take out my checkbook and write them a check for $100 to hold the deal until all the costs are tallied up.

These people looked at me like I was totally crazy. Whadda wanna to that for?

I actually had to argue with 'em to take my $100 down payment.

Go figure. :>)

Ya know Allan, was thinkin about you today. Was out doing phone repairs over around Manteno and Wilmington, IL. today, and passed that guys barn again. You know the one, got more dang RED than I've ever seen. Always got something new to rebuild. When warms up, I'll stop in sometime when he's got them all setting outside his barns and get you a picture. I'm guessing there's probably about 15 or so. And I don't get RFD TV in Illinois during the week, only at home in Indiana on weekends, so tonight I turned it on. Was some show called Downunder. Ever seen it? If you have, you know why I thought of you.

There may be more to this story than we were told, but it just sounded like a good faith effort on a buyer's part to make sure he got the item he wanted. It is getting pretty bad when you can't buy something for more than the asking price!

Everybody is getting so crazy! The africans and middle eastern folk have us seeing boogie men everywhere. Somebody can correct me if I am wrong, but they cannot scam you if they (A)don't know where the equipment is, (B)don't know the name and number of your accounts and (C)you don't ante up anything of value until you have cash money in your hand.

Everybody I buy from these days is looking me over like I am trying to pull something on them.
Used to be the other way around.

Akmed and I are related by marriage; He is very stand-uppish guy and would nevr attempt to scamm anyone. It is very sad that peoples just like us who are attempting to make an honest living are lumped in with crooks. I agree there are some bad dudes, but Akmed is not one.

No, one was a Tom & the other was a Simmon.
They are not dead give aways like a lot of the Nigerian ones were. These guys are going to trip some people up.

I had the exact same thing happen to me this week....only it was for a race car trailer I had posted for sale on another site. Wanted ALL my information but wouldn't give their's. Then to top that off, I keep getting e-mails from scammers wanting to sell me something exactly like I am bidding on Ebay for at a lower price! Did anyone catch the restored'58 Vette for sale yesterday for a "buy it now price" of $8000.00 or the '68 Camaro for $6000.00? SCAM, SCAM, SCAM!!!
