Permatex ?

Replacing an axle seal and making new gasket/shims.Need .004" more with the gasket material I am using.Anyone ever check to see how much a heavy coat of Permatex will add if any?Guess I could use some onion skin paper.

MSB: You can get 0.004" with permatex easily enough, but the key is letting it set up before tightening the joint. The down side of this method is that unless your initial bead application is smooth, you can end up with uneven torque.

When you shim the cams on a Sporster dry and then final install cover with aviation permatex it makes no change.It must squish right down .

I don't think you will get anything measureable with permatex. Even non-metallic gasket material is marginal unless you can check the clearance after clamping and add or delete. Compressibility is too unpredictable.

I would use metallic shims. We used to use plastic gaskets on hydraulic pumps & motors for clearances way back when, but they required a specific & accurate torque by application.
