I have a ford 1991 F250. The mechaic tells me the tourqe converter is shot and a tranny will cost about $1800. I'm thinking about just junking it as there are some other problems with the truck. Question finally, can't just the tourqe converter be replaced, not the whole tranny? Thanks Craig

That would have the E4OD as said earlier in this thread. That tranny was designed for passenger car use and is weak for truck service. The tranny was upgraded sometime around 1995 and is improved some. Mine has been rebuilt twice by Ford, last time about 40K miles ago. It was upgraded at that time and seems to do well now. When the torque converter fails it throws trash through the rest of the tranny as mentioned earlier. Clean fluid and filters are required for the E4OD to have any life at all. Do a search on E4OD and you can read for weeks about this tranny.

I just had a 400 in a 3/4 ton chevy rebuilt, it was just over $600.00. If yours is a C6 it shouldn't be much higher. Depends on what part of the country your in I would guess.

Nah, don't pay no $1,800 for a tranny for that. Cruise around looking for a junk truck in someones back yard, if you find one in someones back yard you could probably buy the whole thing for $500, granted the truck would be junk, but if the tranny was ok then you'd be ahead by quite alittle. You might also take out an ad in the local paper in the parts section and find one for a whole lot less that way. I don't know where your at, but most of the trucks of that year have already been junked as the bodies rust out before the drivetrain goes due to all the roadsalt used in the winter. The scrapyards are full of them also, so you migt want to give them a call, and last I knew the scrapyards allowed you to bring something like that back if it was no good.
Hope this helps!

I would think that $1800.00 is a little high, I could get it done down here for about $1200.00, maybe he is doing an exchange unit, which could possibly make it cost a little more. If you have it done, make sure that the tranny cooler, and lines are all back flushed, or you will have the same problem again shortly.

Craig,

The torque converter is the last part that I would think has failed. What is your truck's symptoms?

Allan, the Torque Converter disentigrates in them, then the pieces from the converter plug the tranny cooler, no cool fluid for tranny, and burns up the rest of the tranny. I have a friend who has a tranny shop, and this is a regular thing with that era, so I imagine his tranny is shot also now.
