Scary Legislation!

Hey guys, just read an article on mlive from the Flint Journal newspaper on "old tractor rollover accidents" This article basically talks about how evil old tractors kill their innocent drivers by rolling over on them. The scary part of this is that a state rep named John Gleason (D)from Flushing is sponsoring legislation in the Michigan house requiring all tractors built prior to 1970 to have R.O.P.'s. While I agree that the deaths that have taken place are tragic, I cant imagine having to place rollover bars on 20 of my old tractors. Does anyone know more about this bill? or if collectors will be included in this? I really think this is something every collector in Michigan and the rest of the country should pay close attention too!

Best to contact Senator Cropsey who just sponsored and got passed the NO Helmet law for Michigan. And we aren't even in the habit of spreading our brains all over the highway with our show tractors. Just an occasional spill or back-flip.

This is not about machines that kill skilled operators. People think that driving a tractor should be like driving a car. The one guy almost killed his 2 year old with him.

Any one in Michigan should be writing their legislators and the Farm Bureau.

I ain't never seen a roll over 'round here and there is MANY hills...
just got to use that thing God put between your ears....

I think it would be nearly impossible to pass let alone enact this legislation. However it would be easy as it has already been done in some states, to make it illegal for a hired person to operate a non-ROPS tractor. I assume in these states, this also prohibits non-family members from any use, including pleasure operation; eg. parades.

Email him and tell him if he doesn't back off, you'll send his wife naked pictures of him with his secretary, and will post them on the web too. And for good measure, send him one.

Lawcreators, always in the back pockets of of special interest groups, like insurance companies.

The only way a dirtbag politician would be able to get that to work is to have ALL old tractors registered, and we know how effective that would be. Kind of like trying to get guns registered, it aint gonna happen.

SHHH! Don't give them any ideas. If they get wind of such an idea they would probably be able to figure out a way to make a clear $50 registration fee per tractor EACH YEAR so that more taxes could be spent on their favorite pet projects.

That bill may end up forcing he scraping of old tractors that didnot have a factory engineered rops. Homemade rops are false security. There was a posting here a a month or so ago that showed how a even home built by a professional failed. Those old tractors could also snap at the bellhousing in a rops rollover.

Now I wonder who could be behind it .... anyone remember the 49-50 Tucker Car only 50 were made .... who was behind that one.
If you have to scrap the old stuff the new stuff, with all the new expensive sensors and computers will soon be the old stuff, and lots of $$$ to fix.

Glen I really think that because as you say'farmer fixed"that we aren't smart enough to engineer something that will work?I am glad not everybodt listens to al the nay sayers and ventures out on their own to make something.I have seen PLENTY of factory engineered devices that are down right scary,made and designed by engineer types.This legislation is trying to legislate common sense.Just my 2cents

Rare indeed is the Farmer with the know-how, access to the proper quality steel, fabrication equipment, qualified welder, test lab with metal strain analysis, measure human stresses, several tractors to perform practical roll over tests and the brains to wear a seat belt with the rops. It just isn't going to happen. Another Mr. Tinker is going to miss an important factor(s) and maim or kill somebody.

If ROPS are "common sense" on tractors, how about ATV's?, snowmobiles?, and how about that old cartoon everyone has seen with a ROPS on a horse ridden by a cowboy? Should a saddle have an intergral ROPS? Where do we stop? Do we stop only when your rights are being trampled, and everyone else can just fend for themselves? Or do we continue to let personal freedom reign and real "common sense" prevail? I have all flat ground and don't mow ditches, IF the good Lord wants to come down and turn my tractor over on me when I am operating in the field, so be it. I don't think any legislation is going to have that great an impact on tractor safety, unless they somehow prevent unskilled/unqualified operators from using one.

Steak knife and claw hammer are dangerous if used improperly. Someone forgot to tell these fellers that you can't legislate away stupidity.

I've beeen tractoring for 57 years with no rollovers, and I've got some pretty hilly ground.

I'll probably be feeding worms be for too many of these crazy laws get passed.
