Hi Guys,

Wet, heavy snow here today.

Since it has been pretty well established in certain circles that I don't have the mental prowess to do anything else within this organization, it is my responsibility to keep the darned wet snow off the uplinks, which simply cannot "be down" for any reason.

However, benefits of the job include my nosing around on the YT site from time to time and reading about old tractors. :>)

Rumor has it that I may also be promoted (if I qualify) to cleaning the toilets too. It's just one long, horrid grind around here. :>(

Well, they know you better than we do, so based on your post I'll have to defer to their judgement..... ....

Here in the snowbelt, it's been my experience that the loss-of-signal problem doesn't come from snow on the dish but snow on the LNB. I've seen freezing rain or wet snow slightly covering the front of the LNB causing the signal to go out. I made a small plastic cover to keep weather off the front cover and solved that problem. However, signal loss due to heavy rain or snow can't be fixed except to wait for the storm to pass.

Not complainin', but that's more snow than we've seen all year(SE Nebraska)! Had a small one (1 1/2") in January. December gave us about 8" total. Got a spit or two of rain last night (21 March). Some guys have all the luck - I ain't got no satelite TV niether, just the old fashioned air stations.

Allen put some heat tapes on the back of the dishes. You can use silicon calk to hold them in place then just plug them in once in a while or use a timer during the winter. Mark H.

Allan,

I can tell you from first hand experience about that "promotion" (I was promoted last year) cleaning toilets is way overrated. Definitely a job that should be outsourced.

What to do with an old Dish? A feller up in N.E. Pa. used his old, large dish antenna to build a real nice Gazebo! It made a fancy roof, and some judicious use of wrought iron railing and some square and round pipe, a lot of wleding and some nice white paint made it look really nice! by: Rustyj

Allan, I for one appreciate all of the conversations you have been/are engaging in, but I am curious, what exactly do you do for a living? I thought you were a teacher.

Also, did I miss the status of your dream farm? And I didn't catch how big it was.

Again thanks!

Yeah, I'm the quiet one and I'm taking it all in.

Hi Guy,

Oh heck no, I'm dumbern' a fencepost staple.

We run an on line contracting company which allows folks to work from their home computer and my job around here is to keep all these servers up and running. My best friend is a Honda back up generator. :>)

Yes Sir, going to look at another farm on Saturday. It's been a long hard pull tryin' to find one that fits the bill.

Lotta junk out there; seems as though the good farms aren't for sale. :>(

Alan

My dish dealer told me he sprays all new installations with silicone spray and if it is done every year it takes care on the problem.

well don't fall off the roof.
Kinda yucky here to but I told the girls not to b*tch too loud. If it don't rain and snow now they won't have any grass to eat later. I gave them 4 bales of staw to lay on and it has quit snowing for the time being. gotta go back out in a minute and check on a new one and make sure he gets up and sucks.

I can sure relate to that new one. Was home on spring break last week and calving is really heating up. We were having anywhere from 5-6 per day. Back at school today, and called home to see how it was going. Dad has 14 new ones on the ground including one set of twins. So far no problems, but cows sure can time it sometimes.

Well I clean toilets AND fell off of the roof. Would have been pretty funny if on video. Left ski tracks down the pitch and an almost a perfect outline of myself in the snow drift. Had I not thrown my hand into the window on the way down I would have laughed (once I got my wind back). Lotta blood though. I won't adjust the antenna right after a snow ever again.. It is a Darwin thing.

Hi Howard,

You got that right; this is the first moisture we've had since the first part of November. Supposed to snow all night and all day tomorrow. Let 'er come, I say. 'Course, I'm not the feller with babies on the ground either.

Sure wish I could come down there to your plow days. Meetin' you and a lot of the guys from this board would be a treat and a memory maker, that's for sure.

Good luck with the new addition,

Allan

Back when I had Primestar and then Directv, I used to have to sweep the snow off the dish about once a year to get the signal back.
Since I've had Dish, I don't think I've ever had to do it. And it ain't because we stopped having snow. The Dish dish is darn near vertical so the snow can't accumulate in it anyways. There would have to be some heavy wet stuff blowing directly onto it to make it stick and cause signal loss and that hasn't happened yet.
