Found a used unit close to home, not familiar with tractor other than bad reputation of 3208 motor. What else is there to look out for? Don't do alot of tillage so my expectations are quite low, price is reasonable. Any help greatly appreciated.

We have had ours for about 10 years now and really like it. Was cheap horsepower! They are rather light so if you need to pull hard you will need fluid and weights. Ours is unweighted and it will spin out but it is really nice in the muck! Don't even worry about that Cat 3160. Ours has over 5000 hours and it purrs great. After all it is a Cat, and that goes for the 3208's too. But they are high rev engines and without a turbo they don't like low rpms and lugging. Need to run near 2000-2500 it seems for the best torque. Only problem we have is the belts that run the hyd pumps come off but on ours the brackets for the pumps are a bit wore and stuff can wobble a bit. And the bushings in the shaft that connects the engine to the tranny have gone out twice but that is a really easy fix. Other than the noise they are a brute, hard as nails. I'd go for it.

Right-on! The Cat V8 does not to lug, causes rod bearing failures. The engine is not as sensitive to continuous high rpm operation, but it does increase bearing caviation erosion. Run at the engine speeds you recommend and the engine will last a long time. One negative aspect, most 6 cylinders will get better fuel consumption.

The trouble I had with mine was the E brake and the splined shaft and drum. Also noisy to run.

We had one for 7 years and we pulled the snot out of it. Never had any mechanical problems including the engine. Only problem we had was a few electrical problems. The dealer was afraid we had ruined the clutch when we traded for a Versatile 950 but it was a good tractor. The belts driving the hydraulic pumps do go out once in a while.

My neighbor had 2 of them still has one. Very troublefree for him. The other one only went about 10 miles away. Why are you afraid of the 3208?

Never had a tractor with a V8 but have heard horror stories, mostly from '86 series IH owners as well as same circa White 4wd. General opinion is to stay away and go to a large six to begin with. I don't seed enough to justify something better so I'm drawn by the price to these older straight draft tractors,no air seeders or no till in the future. Thanks for your info, greatly appreciated.

Who said I was afraid of the 3208? I said ours was a good tractor engine included. Ours had the Cat 3160. According to my sources the 1800 had the 3160 and the 1805 had the 3208.

I think he meant my fear of the 3208 which I mistakenly thought was in this tractor, ergo my reason for posting in the first place; I know nothing!!!!. Thank you so much for the info, now is the 3160 also a CAT v8 motor and did it precede the 3208? The reputation of the v8's is not good(ih v800) so I'm a little nervous considering the age of this tractor. Thank you for your time.

Find an older Versatile, with a Cummins in-line 6. MUCH more reliable, and MUCH cheaper to overhaul, when needed.
