Lots of come backs on the two Field Marshalls on YTmag Tractor auction... good talk all around! Question on my coment in auction summary. I state is "shot gun start"... that"s not to mean a golf match. Herein respectfully, place 12 gauge blank shot shell into receiver on cylinder head and close cap, pull pin and kaboom... exploding gases compress and impart spin to piston/crank, viola she starts, or at least that"s what is supposed to happen. Was at ranch auction couple years ago where these twos sister went under the gavel... she was a beauty... not sure who got her though... thought I would show pic for you all to see a mint unrestored one... enjoy. Sigh....

Those things under load were enough to make you wish you had left your ears at the house. I understood the shotgun start was not to be used regularly as it was very tough on internal engine components. Better to heat the head with a blowtorch and then use compressed air, but that is only good for an "in-the-shed-start". have you heard thaT? maybe our UK friends can jump in here. Saw one in VERY original condition(like Where do I start) in Manitoba. There's a guy a few miles below us has one of the big Lanz Bulldogs(like 50 or 60 hp) and you can hear him for miles when he lights it up. Neat to hear, but I think you would hear them in your sleep if you worked them regularly.

Most use a special smouldering taper, inserted into the combustion chamber, and then wind them on the handle (handle is big enough for two).
One would also use a fairly slow burning powder in the cartridge to prevent damaging the engine.

Now in Alberta, (OH&S April 30, 2004, midnight) it is "law" to wear hearing protection when sound is above 80Db (dB?)... (I think that is about the sound a vacuum cleaner makes... so I am compelled not to ever use one and go tractor hunting when she runs it). So I go to MacDonald"s the other day and they are renovationing, using a jackhammer on the floor, no ear plugs for worker (no safety glassess either) and people eating the 1/4 pounders oblivious to the fact that it only takes one time for hearing to be damaged from one time exposure... say what? I left. Yup, I love to hear all those engines run... am looking for a straight 8 right now to put in my classic truck... now there is a sound...
