My friend has an old front end loader that he is willing to give me. It has been off the tractor and sitting in the woods for years. It looks rough but with a lot of work would probably clean up nice. Is it hard to rebuild hydraulic cylinders and expensive? WOuld it be worth it? Thanks

Hi Bob,

Most cylinders can be rebuilt, about $50 in seals depending on cylinder size. Some cylinders are a odd ball size and will need replaced or cut your own new seals out of leather.

The main piston seals are called a Chevron seal and looks like this for a single acting; >>> with double acting looking like; <<< >>>.

I use a engine cylinder hone for bore clean up if needed. I use a piece of 1/2" rod to make a extension to reach the bottom of the bore then use a 1/2" drill motor.

Clean all parts very well, use a engine ring compressor to help the new seals past the bore threads or into the bore, and use plenty of oil on the seals before installing them into the bore!

Seals and 'o'rings are cheap. If the cylinders ere left in an extended position, and not too rusted from that- takes just a bit of emery cloth and elbo grease to renew them. If they are pitted or slam-damaged- that is another story. Any old trip bucket loader is worth 2-3 hundred if it is cylinder only- not cylinder and cable. With a hydraulic bucket it is worth double or more.

Get some more details on the loader if you can. Are the cylinders single or double acting? Was the loader put in the woods with the cylinders extended or retracted. If they are a extended and a good grade of chrome they may be O. K. For just conversation, I called on a cylinder shop one time and they bored the cylinders 1/4 inch because of wear and of course they made new pistons. They were more than $56.00 Of course the cylinders had a 2 foot bore. Good luck!

Hyd cylinders are usually not hard to rebuild.
Seals and o-rings are reasonably priced. Take a good look at the rods. They need to be smooth. Really smooth or else youre going to be replacing seals often.

Hope it isn"t a Farmhand. I am in the process of rebuilding cylinders on one of those. They changed design of cylinder seals and am forced to also buy new pistons at 56.00 each. Ouch.
