I wonder what effect the $2.35/gal diesel fuel prices will have on buying non-rare tractors that need to be hauled long distances. Just got an estimate of $2300 ($1.75/mile)to haul a $2000 tractor 1310 miles! Buy local, I guess.

I would find a tractor a little closer to home. With the prices of fuel going up, I am going to a tractor show this weekend and after that I am putting my tractors in the shed for the rest of the year. If somebody wants to see my tractors that bad, they can spend the money on gas to come see them.

Guess it comes down to how bad do you want it.

Me I wouldn't pay any more than

Sale + Delivery - 10% (comfort to inspect) is -vs- a local buy.

In other words, to me, it's worth 10% to look, kick, and hear it before handing over the money..

Can tell you one thing from personal experience. Two years ago we got DOT numbers, IFTA stickers, cargo insurance, liability insurance, bigger semi-tractor, longer flatbed trailer, winch I mounted on the tractor and hard-wired into the electrical system, and as of now, we have just quit hauling anything unless it is VERY close and I can use it here on the farm. Can"t justify charging a fella $2.00 a loaded mile for hauling his tractor, but can"t justify even starting our truck to go out and live on the road and pay today"s diesel prices just for the experience. Been there done that, don"t need any more. It has definately impacted our operation. Too bad too, cause we really liked the traveling. Oh well, this too shall pass. Later, Harley

I don't think that this will pass until bio diesel is used. Price of crude oil is supposed to tripple this year, making a barrel over $150 a barrel. This will mean that gasoline will be around $6 a gallon!!! Since at $2 a gallon we are paying $50 for a barrel of crude oil, so when that price tripples, so will diesel and gas prices, as you all can already see, the prices are on the rise. I think that the next fuel will be SVO (Straight vegetable oil) or waste frying oil in diesels. Hydrogen fuel cells will be too hard right now to get fueling stations so widely spread, and the only other option is petroleum fuel cells, which won't help much. Major auto makers have all made a diesel hybrid that was a medium sized car that could get 70-80 mpg, but the government won't let them produce these hybrids because the diesel burns too dirty, but that may change next year with the low sulfer diesel regulations. Thats just what I have found from looking it up about a week ago. Let me know if you all know anymore.
