you only want to put freon in on the low side. If you put it in on the high side your new nickname could be lefty. The easiest way I have found if it is a cycling clutch system, is at about 70 degree ambient temp the clutch will not cycle at idle when it is full. You can also look at the low side pressure. For r12 it is about 30-35 depending on ambient temp and r134a will be slightly lower. Just make sure you dont try to put freon in the high side with the engine running.

Like the other guy wrote, the vacuum is essential. If you don't do it, you'll have moisture in the system that will later freeze. In regard to capacity, if the original system was for R12, it will take less of the 134A.

DP,

System clear empty?

Pull a vacuum on the system, shut off the vacuum pump, close the valves and let 'er set for 5 to 7 minutes to make sure it will hold.

Open the refrigerant to the low side, when it stops taking, start the outfit with the air on and continue to fill until you reach the correct load weight per the spec label.

Hope this helps,

Allan

Thanks for the input. I should have been more specific. The system is not empty just low. I I have watched the mechanic before and I new they first fill one side then the other, but I never new the order. How do you find out how full to fill it? I have taken my tractor to the auto mechanic to be recharged, and I know he has no info for filling amount. Do they use presure readings?

If its 134 get the little cans from walmart??? I guess buy them at a parts store if you dont want the WM stigma.
The only other way I know to get freon is 20-30+ lbs? cans from wholesaler. Most systems will hold about 2-3lbs.
