If the oil is at the very front of the engine and coming out of a hole in the bell housing, it sounds like the seals on the crank may be dry. This could either be the result of the tractor not being used very often and the seals are dry rotted, or that the tractor hasn't been run in a while and the seals are just a little dry and haven't expanded to fill up the space. IF the oil pressure is good, then you know that the bearings are ok, so the seals are probably what are leaking. If the leak isn't too bad, it should be able to go a while without any major repare. Is hte oil in the bell housing engine or tranny? If its tranny, I would be a little cautious unless they just did tranny work and its in there from where they worked on it. Normally, this is a sign of a bad seal in the tranny. I would ask the lady if you could run it for a while and then, clean off all the oil, and allow it to run for a little longer and see if it still leaks a lot. If its not leaking any/much then, the seals were probably just a little dry. The main thing to this is to make sure you have good oil pressure. Its not unusual fot an older tractor to drip a little oil in some places, but it should be a VERY slow drip at the most, preferrably just a moist spot on the engine. If the oil pressure and compression are goood, then I would say, go ahead, sounds like the hydraulics are good, and I am assuming no tranny trouble, but I would give it a good drive and go down a coulple of hills in the higher gears and make sure they don't pop out, gears are expensive. There are a lot of good articles on the web on what to look for when buying a used tractor, I would check one of those out. Also, ask if she has done any major work, if so, get either the reciept or the name and phone of the person who did it to ask the person who did it if they saw anything else when they worked on it. Goodluck, let me know if you need anything else, feel free to e-mail. Hurst
