Best now to check engine serial. It is on a flat machined surface just under NO.1 plug. This number will be stamped rather than cast in place. The number should be within 2000 of the tractor serial number.

Then you can look at casting codes. Those are the series of numbers and a letter indicating date casting was made. These look like they have a round head blade screw cast between digits. It is month and day by number and year by letter. X is 1952, Y is 1953, V was not used, thus you can go forward or backward from that. Each casting on tractor will have one of these date codes. If they are all same year or two adjacant years, your quite sure it is an original tractor. If those codes are two or more years apart you can be assured someone has made it up from two tractors. Not uncommon to find one odd year casting on these, been a few misfortunes over the years.
