can you replace a 3160 caterpillar engine with a inline 6 cylinder engine such as a 3116 or a 8.3 cummins and maintain the same road speed

Have you thought about a 3306 cat this would drop right in and they have 300hp and may be cheaper.

Good morning. I hate to seem stupid about those engines, but tried to find some quick info on horse power and torque ratings. That's what is going to matter in the end. Obviously if they can maintain the same RPMs at the fly wheel the tires will rotate at whatever their perspective RPMs are as well. But in reality I'd think your main concern would be maintaining RPMs and torque to those big paws under load in the fields.

I didn't find anything on the Cats, but am sure it's there. I did hit on the 8.3L Cummins, and it says that is rated from 150 HP to 320 HP at 1000 pounds of torque, under 3 different models. It also went on to say that it's an "L" gas motor, which I assume is natural gas, since it mentioned how the City of LA's putting them in their busses for clean air. Not a bad thing if it does the job and is cost efficient.

Not that I intended to, but did find a place for part numbers and specs for my 5.9L Dodges if and when I need it. Thanks. Late now, time to shower and get out into the fields.

Mark

I would thinkif the engines turn the same rpm the ground speeds would be the same.
