OT: Safety Chain attachment for bumper hitch?

Bought a low mileage F150 with a bumper hitch. A place for the ball but no place for anchoring the the safety chains. I didn't want to start drilling holes through the rubber covered steel and there are no predrilled holes under the rubber step pad. Is there a standard plate with loops or hooks that can be bolted in common with the ball, either on top or below the bumper? I thought I would ask before drilling and installing eyebolts.

Good advice and I wasn't thinking right, for sure. I had just worn out an 88 Silverado that had a Class 2 hitch and it wouldn't retrofit to the 90 F150. All I have is a little 4 x 8 two wheel trailer, but I should know better. The Chev pulled an SC Case home on a rented car trailer-no incident, but I'll never do that again. So, your advice is sound, I just will never know what I will be tempted to hook up to and pull (just a little ways, of course). Thanks, Leonard

Whenever I trade pickups I always insist on a 10,000 lb bumper. some have recievers built in. Just a mater of preference. Sounds like you need a heavier bumper.

Don't go with things like eyebolts, they don't hold when they get a load put on them. I snapped mine off just trying to tug a car with some chain.

Get a real hitch that bolts to the frame rails - will have loops or holes for you to use for chain. DO NOT use the bumper hitch. At best you will bend the bumper. As others say, a lot worse can happen. Chain needs to hook to some other spot, you aren't quite thinking clearly on the point of the chains, can't use the same bolt or hole for a plate for the chains.....

Get a reciever hitch on your frame.

Twenty yrs ago I had an mt 2 horse trailer for delilvery to a friend, attached to a bumper hitch. I had to slam on the brakes and it popped the rivets on the plate to the bumper. Only one stayed connected and I kept control of the trailer. Never again, even with an mt trailer. You might find a bolt on receiver in a wrecking yard. That is where I buy mine real cheap. The last one for a Ford 3/4 ton was 75.00 (and a famous brand at that).

Safety chains- can NOT be hooked to a bar that is attached with the ball. Must be attached someplace so that they hold in case of ball failure. The rule of thumb to check for proper length- unhook the ball with chains hooked, chains should support the trailer without letting the hitch touch the ground.

if you're planning to pull any more than 500 lbs., spend the money and get a reciever hitch for your truck. they are readily availible for around 100-150 dollars, and easy to install. i don't trust a bumper hitch at all.just my opinion, but i have seen what happens when a trailer comes loose on the highway. it's not pretty.

I'll certainly agree on the Receiver hitch! Those chrome step bumpers are only held on the truck with 4 little bolts, and aren't approved for anything heavier than a 12' aluminum boat, or a log splitter! Anything heavier than that will be decidedly unsafe on the step bumper!! A pair of steel hooks welded to the frame under the ends will be safe! But you should get a receiver hitch! That's the one that takes a square piece of steel stock, drilled thru in 2 places, one for the ball, and one for the steel pin and clip that hold the steel shank into the hitch receiver! This receiver hitch should be welded to the frame, although i had one bolted on and it never came loose! And, i towed a 20 ft. travel trailer all over for years, and never had any trouble with it! Reese used to make a good hitch, but i'm not sure if they are still making and selling them. go to a camping trailer seller and ask about them. Also, make doubly sure you have some kind of anti-sway device on the hitch! you'll really love yours, when some goof goes by with his trailer swaying back and forth, and maybe with one or the other of the wheels leaving the pavement! And, it has put folks down over the hill, or up on the center guard rail on the turnpike! by: Rustyj
