My campershell says no humans in shell while vehicle in motion. Should I be worried about a dog back there, too?

I like to get me a trained cattle dog. One I could tell - go get the cows and bring them here...

He's got to ride in the truck for two hours at a shot. If it were real hot he could ride on the floor board, but not usually.

I've hauled the dogs back there for years, winter and summer. Slider windows in the cab of the truck and front of the cap, with a doughnut sealing around them (inflated bicycle inner tube) provides heat in the winter. I also bought adjustable roof vents that opened like air scoops sucking in air going down the road on each corner of the front of the cap roof (cap place sells them), blowing out the open side windows like ram-air conditioning - close them when it rains, snows. The dogs love it. Throw a piece of carpet down in the bed to absorb shocks when they lay down. Works fine. My dogs take care of the place, I try to take care of them.

I also think part of the reason they say no riders back there is because folks often just clamp the caps down, instead of drilling and bolting them down. Clamps have a tendency to loosen over time, and need to be adjusted. I've seen caps fly off when just clamped. Too expensive for me to lose, so 6 holes, 6 bolts, no clamps, it stays on the truck.

Just lawyer talk, unless you have some local law against. Just make sure your exhaust is sound and exits behind your truck. Hauled parrots from Las Vegas to Mississippi and later back to Texas. No problems and they have very sensitive lungs. Watch that the dog does not get overheated. I spent the extra on gas to run the air conditioning with the sliding glass open to the cab across the desert. It was late spring and outside temps were in the 90's.

As long as you can open the windows on the shell it will be ok. My dog rode in one for years and enjoyed it. I even rode in one from Louisiana to Florida and back, when I was younger of course...

This thread reminds me of my county where they tried to pass a law where it was illegal to carry a dog in the back of a pickup -- you dog had to ride in the front seat while the wife and kids rode in the truck bed!

I think the camper shell could have some carbon monoxide dangers.

The biggest problem I see is heat.....monitor the temp and make sure you have good air flow....hotter months of the year coming up..... .
