OT- It never fails

Never fails, something has to go wrong at the worst time. A trucker is picking up the B tomarrow, and the starter goes south.
Luckily, she started after two cranks and the new owner is very understanding.
The last M Dad sold did the same thing. Anybody else have this luck with selling tractors?

I had the same thing happen last year. A guy came to look at my tractor and had a trailer with him. The tractor cranked about four times and ran great. He agreed to purchase and when we tried to crank it to load the starter went out. I lowered the price bu $200 and he bought it.

When I sold my H Farmall, the transmission started acting up. It was so quiet, never made a sound unitl I started advertising for sale. The fluid was old and gunky and ended up making it not want to go into any gear while running. I pulled off that bottom panel, and WD-40ed the crap out of it while showing to propective buyers. I had to take less money of course. On top of that, the float on the carb I had just had rebuilt was sticking. When I had bought the tractor a year earlier, the carb had ABSOLUTELY NO indication of needing one, no leaks, sputters, spits etc. Then it started dumping gas in the oil, like 3 times. Oh well.

I purchased a JD 5020 checked it out, and for it's age ran ok. First time I tried to use it the trans input shaft seal went out. Finished the discing job using loosing about 10 gal. of oil. Changed seal when I fisished. Next year the Axle securing bolt came loose and axle slid out, Stan

I had an old 10-20 which always started on second crank. It was not for sale. A man spotted the tractor and says to me , does that 10-20 run? I said , yes it does. He went on to say , I'll give you $275.00 for that tractor. But first , I want to see it start. I agreed. Yup , you guessed it. Too this day , that tractor hasn't started.

I sold one by taking it to the potential new owner for a demo first. He mowed about 25 acres with it in 1 day (5' mower) and sprung a leak in the radiator in the process. Luckily I had enough to cover that in the price and had one I could use for a replacement.

Oh-Ya A couple of months ago I bought a new tractor, the day they delivered it I went to load up my trade in and the slave cylinder for the clutch was out, in all the time I owned that tractor it never gave any trouble at all. The dealer was very understanding and took it just the same, of course he has probably made a years salary on me over the course of a few years...Jim

David, It is embarassing to sell anything and have it break down right away on the buyer. It is always a gamble when buying these old machines but happening twice it looks like you guys are good at knowing just when to sell. LOL Your buyer has a great sense of trust in you and must have a great sense of humor too. I have never had that happen when I sell something but it happens a lot when I loan things out.

Tell me about it---I had a tractor here, stored outside, for a friend. it was well covered, battery taken inside, etc.! Friend called yesterday, said he had a tractor buyer ready to get it! Said: get it started, running, show it for me tomorrow! So, this morning, out i went to uncover the tractor! Installed battery, added a little oil to full mark, got on the seat, pushed in the brake/ clutch, turned key to start! No Go. So a bit of ether got it going! Not much, just one little squirt! Ran a little while, so i put it in reverse to back off the boards it sat on. thats when the tranny slipped a cog inside! RATS!! I shut it off, then went to start it after some new gasoline was added, and the engine went POOF, and out came a BIG cloud of white smoke, and it wouldn't start again! My wife thought i had disappeared, in the smoke! now, this tractor wasn't a late model, it was a gimmie last year, and i sold it to the man.(Pete) He drove it home--only 4 miles-on the back paved roads! (Smart, eh?) Then, his tenant used it to mow large rocks, necessitating a complete rebuild of the mowing deck, which the tenant then switched to his brothers tractor, and put the other deck on Pete's tractor! There was no way to prove it, but the new deck spindles i had installed were gone, and some old ones were there instead! And the paint color was different on the deck! This was done while Pete was out of town on business! This kind of stuff makes me wonder why i started repairing tractors! I think i'm going to stay with lawn mowers from now on! by: Rustyj
