I"m a new comer to tractor repair and could use some advice figuring out why I can not get the Farmall M started and what to check out or replace. Used Sat for 8-10 hrs and Sun for 4 hrs. Started up after taking a lunch break and then just quit running and it will not start. Cleaned fuel strainer, drained gas from carbureator and reconnected everything. Turns over but won"t fire up. Any suggestions?

Make sure the switch is on and the valve for the gas is on. I forgot each of those at one point or another and was scratching my head trying to figure out why mine wouldn't start. :)

Good luck.

My new motorcycle has an annoying electrical fault where the starter switch won't work sometimes, wiggle the key and it works. The other day I'd warmed up the bike and shut it off for a second while my wife climbed on, I don't normally do that, but we were on a hill and it was easier to hold it up in gear with the engine off.
Well when I went to restart it I couldn't get the starter to go. I wiggled the key and swore and got annoyed and finally my wife said "the kill switch is off." Sure enough I had shut it off with the kill switch and forgot. Flipped it back and it fired right up.

MJL, Not enough info: check to see if you have spark, pull a plug wire, use pliers and hold it near a bolt head and have someone spin it over, if you have no spark, then start with checking the wires to the coil, then see if you have spark from the coil, if not you have a couple options: wiring or coil, if you have spark from the coil but not to the plugs ( I am assuming this is a battery ignition tractor, if not just see if you have spark from the mag.) than you probably have a problem inside the distributer...points, condenser, rotor...if you have spark, the look at the fuel system; is the fuel bowl full of sediment? Tank rusty? if so maybe the carb is dirty. Hope this helps a little, Pete
