What Bob said and; check everywhere a wire passes through something, enters or exits sheetmetal, possible pinch points, etc.Generally a wire does not go bad something has pinched or crushed down on it somewhere.

Connect a test light between one of the battery posts and the cable that connects to it. As long as there is significant current drain, the light will remain brightly lit.

Pull fuses and disconnect various devices (the alternator or generator, for example) until the test light dims or goes out altogether, and you'll have located the source of the current draw.

On a car or truck, with courtesy lights and dome lights, you'll have to pull the bulbs out of them first, since you will likely be working with the door open. If those bulbs are in place, they will be putting load on the test light, and you cannot track down the short will there are in the circuit.

Of course, if you want to spend a bunch of money, there are various electronic testers on the market that will help trace a short.

Harbor Freight has nice little multimeters for less than $10. Well worth the effort. Come with instructions too, if you are electrically challenged.
