SE Nebraska is cold and damp - not wet, just damp. 34* at night 48* days. Windy. Most of the corn around here is done last week or not started yet. Supposed to be highs around 60* for the next week or so.

I know a lot of people in Ohio and Northern Ky. got lulled into a sense of early spring. Talked to a friend of mine in Southwestern ohio tonight, and he said he had about 500 acres of corn in good shape, and 150 acres of seed floating around. Around 39-70 degrees, and more scattered rain/storms expected around the area thru sunday. Think I should have been a meteoroligist instead of a AG major, I could always be wrong and get away with it at least!

Mid 80's and DRY in Central Texas. Had to make several attempts to get the spike chisel plow to get under the crust. The disk just skidded across the top.

Never thought it was over, been fooled too many times. But I did get my garden plowed and tilled looks like just in time for some moisture. Wonderful wonderful wet stuff. Been just way too dry to suit me in Glenrock and this helps abit. I'll take all I can get. Summer starts next month doesn't it? trg

Hi Hound,

Oh heck no. It is wayyyyy y too early for corn in this country.

Anything planted sooner than the 1st of May will most certainly guarantee a replant. Last killing frost is right around the 10th of May on average. :>(

Planter is settin' at the ready, tho. :>)

Here too. We don't plant anything until at least may 21. Even then, we often get killing frost in the first week of June. Last year we had one third week of August as well. Garden was a total loss. Even the potatoes died.

Just talked to my brother in Torrington. He said a lot of people are ready to roll with the corn planters. Guess that'll have to wait for awhile. Being a hay farmer/rancher I never complain about spring moisture.

Howdy Dave,

Boy, you need to be a hay farmer down here in S. Ohio. Spring moisture has been my enemy for the last three years. Never can get into my alfalfa to make the first cutting until it has grown, fallen over, and grown a bunch more. Last two years I could pick up a plant and it would top out around my chest. That makes it hard to cut with anything being that long and vined out on the ground ha ha. In fact, last year I cut the first cutting with a 6' rotary cutter. Lost a lot of it but it sure did clip it clean. This year I'm tradin work with a friend from church who has a mower conditioner. So, we'll see if he can have better luck cutting it for me. Oh well, I sure ain't gonna complain though. Though it is rough at times, there isn't a single a bale of hay in that barn now. The good Lord always makes a way for us and I thank Him for it. God bless.
