Been seeing your name on posts lately and couldnt help noticing the familiar handle. Recently read a post describing the weather and think you must be West of the mountains. We are located about ten miles SW of Chehalis. Been a real tough spring for us. Got a large first planting of peas, carrots, beets and fennel in the ground in mid March and have been sidelined ever since. Starting to get a little ndervous time wise. When the weather breaks we will be running 24/7 to cover ground.

Hey, Mike, thanks for the holler. Sorry it took so long to reply, but I don't monitor the boards on weekends. I'm about 5 miles SW of Chehalis on Newaukum Hill. Haven't done too much garden-wise this spring, as I have been trying to finish a "secure" pen for the Mrs.'s stud horse. Don't get me started on that. They are planting raspberries on the Duryea place at Ethel. An old friend of mine at Salkum is shaking his head- he did raspberries about 30 years ago, and never could get any production (and he knows how to farm)- Buyers of the property are east Indian. We shall see.

Hi Mike,

Sorry to hear your weather isn't doing better. I know Michael has direct seeded some, but I think he is waiting on transplanting. Two weeks ago we were 80 degrees. Last weekend it snowed, and we have had a couple of very hard freezes this week. Very dry! I think half the precipitation of this month came as the snow last weekend. The last 3 days the weather idiots have been calling for "rain tomorrow", and tomorrow they will probably say the same thing.

Hope the sun starts to shine on you soon.

Chuck

Thanks Chuck-In a good year we can have three plantings of certain vegetables in by May! We usually start around March 15, and second planting first week of April. May its time to think about the crops that eat up alot of ground like corn and squash. The weather was beautiful here Jan through the 15th of March, so much so that the Governer declared a drought emergency and farmers east of the cascades where told that some water rights would be reduced by 76%. Its been wet since, sometimes real WA sideways rain, others just enough to gum up the equipment. Anyway thanks for the thought.
Best Wishes
Mike

Are you too wet or too cold ? We have been having a cool spell. Nothing is growing (soil temp is only 50 degrees in the afternoon). Put row cover over the onions and lettuce to give it a few more degrees on the 25F nights. Radishes planted 4/2 are just getting their first true leaves.

A bit of both. Too wet to till. Disked yesterday and the 12 foot finish was barely running. Soil temp around 55-58. First planting really doesnt look too good but at least its in. We have thousands of transplants waiting to go in. Usually we can get by in marginal conditions for transplanting but its just been a bit wet, even to weed effectively. Chehalis silt clay soil, some of the best in the country, but very unforgiving if you try to work it early. We run row cover on nearly everything early and on carrots and beets all year, we have started using it on transplants too until they are established, makes a huge difference especially in spring.
