Yazoo YR60 counterweights/traction problems

Hello,

I am having traction problems with my YR60 on small hills. Seems whenever I hit any hilly terrain in the yard, the tires break loose and the only way I can get them to grab is to either stand up, or throw it in reverse until the ground levels out.

I have seen several of these mowers on Ebay recently and some have a large boxy looking thing hanging off the frame in the very back of the mower. Are these weights, and do they act as a counterbalance for the heavy deck? Are they used to get more traction on hilly ground? Anybody have an idea of how much weight I'll need back there?

Thanks in advance,

Kurt

From my limited experience with the Yazoo mower I don't think you want any weight on the rear as it is a directional wheel (steering only). The drive is on the front mower end and that is where you would need any extra weight. I think that when you stand up it transfers a little more weight forward on the drive wheels. Since the mower carries it's own weight are you sure that all the linkages etc. are free and not pushing the drive wheels off the ground? Is your ground maybe exceptionally rough or hilly? Jack

Jack,

Thanks for the reply. I don't think the terrain here is too hilly. Last night I was looking through the exploded diagrams looking for one of the arms for adjusting the belts on the deck, and saw a part number for a 90 lb weight that attaches to the tailframe under the seat. Only guess I have is the outfront mower decks of the 60's and 76's changed the weight balance of the mower too far forward and the weight was needed to allow better traction at the wheels. I'm not sure of this, but the mower I have (60") does very well on flats and very slight inclines, without the weightset in back. Starts to slip when ground is damp on the inclines, and on steeper hills when it's dry. Standing up does help. I'm just trying to work through this traction problem, aside from a terminal case of belt adjustments, the mower does a great job.

Hi Kurt, We've owned , used and loved our YR-60 for 24 years now. Your traction problem is not the counterweight....It is to keep the tail (seat) down for steering when the deck is raised for transport. Yes, slippage is a problem at times, early season wet grass is really bad, it will improve later this year but won't go away, the tread on the tires is turf tread? So it's not supposed to dig a hole, but it can if the wheels are spinning in gravely soil. My solution is to reach over and pull the handle for the deck and lift it some, this will transfer weight that is being pushed to carried and more traction will be at hand for your Yazoo experience!!!! Slopes are a problem with any machine, be ready with the handle , be carefull going into reverse....it will do a backwards "wheely" and you may loose your balance, but since you have been standing up to correct traction problems anyway you may be ready for something new :) Just be careful, it's a machine.... Check your mower for friction,, grease it well, Ahhhh belts, did they squeel in tough grass? The deck will need to be adjusted out , or away from the tractor, if it's not a PTO drive model....there is a Yazoo mower forum on yahoo groups, if you are really bored....No joke...
