Well its getting a little blue around here. My little dog is starting to get old, tired and slow. We were out in the bush this morning, got another coon....makes me sad...she just doesn't have the "jump" anymore. She can sniff and track anything that has a pulse down, that hasn’t changed yet.

This little girl means a great deal to me, I'd hate to lose her. One of these days she's going to go into a hole and not come out. At that point I’d feel like going in there with her.

So I have been thinking of getting another dog. One to...compliment her. Probably a pup of something, something that she could train, and in a year or two, slowly take over the "battling" portion of the vermin hunting. I hate to think that I'm replacing her.

So... what type of dog do you guys like?.. or had in the past that was a good family dog, but could handle some coons as well?

There's so many good ones... in reply to Hound, 05-03-2005 06:47:06
I"ve got two that are gonna do me pretty darned good when they go. The big guy is a lab/healer mix that"s the best there can be. He"s a total gentleman, excellent guard pup, superb family pet, and minds like you wouldn"t believe. At 3 months I had lots of people tell me they couldn"t believe how well he did. He now has malignent lymphoma. Started in his lymph nodes under his chin. huh hasn"t gotten to me in a long time. he"s been doing real good wit it for 3 years. dammit.

We got one from an animal shelter, too. He's the type that would normally be hard to adopt. Not only is he old and partially blind, but he is a breed that most folks fear. Not all pit bulls are vicious. I've never seen a dog as good with kids as this one. Our five year old niece has ridden him like a horse. When he gets tired he just sits down til she gets off.
We've also got a Dalmation, that the brother-in -law gave us. He's a lot of fun, but a little more rambunctuous than ole' Magoo

Rottwelier, Got two females. 100 lbs each. That's 200 hundred pounds that don't know what backing up means. Little sweethearts they are.

Aussie Shepard or Border Collie. The three smartest dogs are German Shepards, Border/Aussie Collie and the Poodle. We raised the current Red Border Collie from a pup with the kids so he will accept them and know his place. He guards the place, plays with the kids, will play fetch as long as you toss something, catch and eat just about any vermin and wants truck rides. I had to give him a blast with the training collar so he would leave the kids rabbits and the chickens alone. He's slept several nights in the garage with escaped rabbits running loose or with new baby chicks. No casualties as of yet. He does want to herd the neighbor’s cattle and has scared them silly. The electronic perimeter fence kept him at our place last year but the county snagged the end of the wire with the mower. 220 yards of wire gone in a couple of seconds. He stayed in the yard for about two months afterwards then discovered travel is "safe". The s.o.b. is going to get “SSS” if he doesn’t wise up soon. He will come immediately when called now. A couple of sessions with the training collar improved his hearing and desire to obey. I've been wondering if that collar would work on the kids or wife?

You guys will think i'm crazy, but the best dogs that i've ever had were Dobermans. Incredibly smart, loyal, protective, funny, and high maintenance. Lost my best buddy to bone cancer a year ago. He was only 7 (people) years young. We raised him from a pup.

Now we have a dobie girl that we adopted from the SPCA. Never will we get another dog from anwhere else. She's been a wonderful dog. Older, just like us.

Rescue a dog from a shelter and you'll have a freind for life.

Hi All!, Austrialian Blue Heelers, Best dog IMO. As other have said there is time or space to fully tell why. My oldest heeler "Doc" I had him 14 yrs. If he could talk, He could have finished my sentences for me. He rode more then 100K miles in the back of my pickup. No tie needed, just "Load Up" and he was there till I told him to "Unload" - "Go Play"
Later,
John A.

Hey!...somebody has to stick up for the lil' guys. Probably not the best choice for a "coon dog", but it's better to wake up in the morning with a warm Chihuahua under your chin than nothing at all!

I've got a lab-mix right now, Lou. That's my boy, when I'm home goes pretty much everywhere with me. That's my boy. Picked up a runny nose a few weeks ago, so had him to the vet a couple of times, and antibiotics that mostly stopped it, but not quite. Had him to the vet for more tests last week, and Saturday while out in the barn looking the new concrete over, figuring out if was cured enough, the vet called. Looks like a tumor high up in his snout at the eyes. D..., that vet didn't need to call me early in the AM with that. Ruined my weekend, and more. So, took Monday off and to the vet for more tests to be sent to Purdue's vet center to see what we can do. Oughta hear tomorrow, and maybe a trip to Purdue. That's my boy. Eight years old, eats well, runs, plays, digs stuff up, that's my boy. If we can fix him up and he's happy and not in pain, then that's what we'll do. But if can't, I'm humane, and won't put him through pain.

Had a female lab-mix got from the pound that had heartworm and a fragmented shoulder blade from being shot before I got her, and thoroughly beat. One of the best until cancer got her at eleven. A couple of years later, lost my border collie mix that I got at the same time with her to kidneys at thirteen, another good boy.

Best dogs? From the pound with one foot in the glue pot if someone doesn't adopt them before their 10 days is up. They're so greatful, even if you don't take care of them, for those that don't. I take care of my dogs, they take care of me. Lou's my boy, and I'm praying like ..., but if and when the time comes, no more for me. Unlike my Amish neighbors, I don't see them as beasts of burdon, a dime a dozen... I can't go through putting another one down after this. That's my boy.

Thanks for asking.

Mark

Had two Orange Tiger Tabby Cats, twin brothers, One died 3 years ago, at age 15 of liver failure. My daughter brought home a Feral Kitten from a farm, at first I did not agree, But he constantly keeps, the remaining Cat, who is 17 going on eighteen going. My point in my case is having a young cat, gave the older cat something to keep up with and teach. Never thought that would happen. Good luck, treat the dog well in his golden years.

If you are looking for a dog that will be a good family and one that will take on a coon I would sugest a Heeler. Heelers are very smart and will take on about anything. I currently have 4 and two of them are search and rescue dogs the other two are up for adoption. Good luck.

We like mutts, can't beat them for long life with no in bred problems. The worst part about having four legged friends is when they leave you behind. I can't go to the pound too often or I would let the animals out and put the people in that had no business with them in the first place! If they arn't going to be a useful part of the family than you just better look and not touch. When you open your heart to your pet they always know the truth about you and love you anyway!

We have an Australian Shepherd. Smartest dog I've ever been around. He learned to drop a ball down to a landing at our front door then run around the fireplace, down the stairs to retrieve it. He just seems to live for my mere presence.

Two years ago we spent over a thousand dollars on an operation to remove bladder stones that were clogging him up and now he has them again. I decided we'd spend the money on another operation if he needs it. I just spent three times that to keep a couple of piece of crap cars running and I figure a dog is worth more to me than any machine.

Lot of different opinions I guess on doggies. Had them all my life and I am 71. Loved them all, and all are different. A month ago tho I buried the most loveable dog I ever had, A 95 pound Golden retreiver.
Still real sad. She loved all and everything. Not a viscious bone in her body. She understood everything, to bad she just couldnt talk. But like all things when an organ quits, sometime there is absolutely nothing anyone can do. Acute kidney failure at 10 yrs and 10 months. Least we are thankful she passed quickly and basically painless. Vet sure tried but guess it was meant to be. Maybe I am just an old softie.

My favorite story for you and your Lab in reply to MAC,IL, 05-03-2005 08:41:44
A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like Mother of Pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?

"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.

"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some iced water brought right up." The man gestured, and the gate began to open. "Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in too?" the traveler asked.

I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill,he came to a dirt road which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

"Excuse me!" he called to the reader. "Do you have any water?"

"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there".

The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in." "How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog. "There should be a bowl by the pump."

They went through the gate and sure enough, there was an old fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree waiting for them.

"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.

"This is Heaven," was the answer.

"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too."

"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's Hell."

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use heaven's name like that?"

"No. I can see how you might think so, but we're just happy that they screen out the folks who'll leave their best friends behind."

Grab a mutt from the pound or a friends cross litter. Full bloods have their brains interbred out. A pound dog will more likely be smarter, stay healthy, and be more loyal than a 100% any breed. I like shepard lab and shepard collie crosses myself for rural dogs. Dad is a veterinarian. Thourobred dogs are a lot like thouroughbred horses. High maintenence and not to practical.

"How Many Dogs Does It Take to Change A Light Bulb?"

Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?

Border Collie: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code.

Dachshund: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!

Rottweiler: Make me.

Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.

Lab Oh, me, me!!!!! Pleeeee eeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? Pleeeee eeeze, please, please, please!

German Shepherd: I'll change it as soon as I've led these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven't missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.

Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture.

Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light bulb!

Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.

Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb.

Pointer: I see it, there it is, there it is, right there.....

Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares?

Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle...

Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.

Great advice, it just seems like many of the ones at the pound KNOW what"s going on, and are somewhat grateful for a new home. Both our dogs came from the pound and were great companions. I like German Shephard mixes myself, they just seem to be more personally loyal than other breeds -- they want to be your "partner", but there"s good ones in all breeds. Just my $.02. Brian
