Well i just picked up a 43Farmall H from one of our memebers.Got a great deal on it and am ready to redo it.It has several bolts that dont even look like bolts anymore and alot of them on that top plate that the seat bolts too are just plain gone. What do i do here.I want to start with that top plate(trans/rear end cover?).How does it come off and i notice the shifter is part of it too. Also what the best way to get whats left of the bolts out. Thanks for any info.

If you have an oreily auto parts store or more then like any auto parts store they sell a drill bit looking tap. You drill a small hole in the top of the bolt then put this bit into the hole, it has reverse threads on it so it will want to dig deep into the bolt. I was really impressed with it. It was under ten dollars. Used it to take out some manifold bolts. You know how rusted those can get. Good luck

The shifter is connected to the cover, there are forks over the gears but they're not attached. Just lift the cover and shifter together. If it has a belt pulley that has to come off first, and the gas tank too. Unbolt the steering post and let it dangle over the side, you don't have to remove the seat but it does take some weight off.

what works easiest for me is to weld a nut to the top of the bolt. The heat fromw welding loosens them up and then you now have a good head to grab onto w/ a wrench. If the bolt is broke flush or slightly below the surface, I put a washer over the bolt and weld the bolt to the washer, then a nut to the washer. Works everytime. Donovan from Wisconsin

P.S. It works easiest w/ a wire feed, but I've done it w/ stick also.

use a cutting torch, heat the nut or bolt red hot, let it cool. should turn out very easy.

Drill away the head and lift off the cover then the bolts may be removed with pliers

If there is any head left on them at all I would start by takeing a flat punch and a hammer and whack the heads real hard to get there attention. Then take a socket close to the size needed, use metric or whatever you can drive on with a hammer then slowly try to remove.

You might also try welding a nut to the top of what's left.

Sometimes you need a rusty wrench to get those rusty bolts out!!:>)

And rusty joints in the shoulder and wrists helps too. Gives a real incentive to get out the impact wrench or even the gas hatchet.
